i wouldn't use a cross bar, it'l damag the rim and tyre. just take it to an ats place and ask nicely, they'll do it for nowt if your polite. you can't do this with no tools. you will if you use a crow bar, anyways, you need at least 2 irons, i use 3!!

if your really worried about stripping the cross head, just take out the lock nut completly and the screw will come with it( or if its ok will stay behind). loosen the screw up and then adjust as normal!! drewps
  4. rim to tyre applications. http://www.dropbears.com/u/utilities/tyrerim.htm I had seen a 120 tyre on the rear BUT you have to junk the chain guard

use rim protectors or some peeps use a water hose cut length wise. also need 2 or 3 tyre irons, they are expensive on ebay but only a tenner from stafford show etc. have a looksy on you tube for a how to!
  8. has it had a service so all the parameters are as factory spec? that's the first thing i do with a bike, can't start diagnosing without the basics in place. I got a call from a friend of a friend who changed a battery on his gilera and "suddenly" there was no electrics! he had a "mechanic" friend look it over and he could'nt fix it after a month I went over after being pestered and i moved a wire over to earth on the battery terminals and the bike had full electrics!! what am saying is, just don't over look the obvious (and don't trust well meaning self proclaimed mechanics)
  9. a hanging starter button? not sure what you mean? on/off switch! , is that the ignition switch or the cut out switch?

10k revs does seem excessive. i'm assuming you start in 1st (1 down) and then lift the gear lever and letting it return after each gear change? it needs this so the gearbox pawl can return and hook the next part of the gear change drum. ('ll stop there before i overcomplicate things) check the gear lever isn't loose 60mph isn't too far from the top speed coz they are restricted to around there

kevin you sure those carbs are correctly jetted for the bike? too rich or lean can have the same effect your describing standard jetting is; 1981 SH/LH mains=110(1&4)& 120(2&3) pilot=42.5 start jet=25 main air=140 pilot air=185 throttle valve=135 on a Mikuni BS34-II if you don't get many replies i can direct you to http://www.xs11.com/forum/ as they are the specialists for the marque cheers drewps
  14. did you really really clean those carbs? we've had peeps on here swear that they did and it ends up that all they did was a quick spray with a carb cleaner. after 10 years sitting, that fuel will be well varnished and I always recommend soaking and use ultrasonic cleaning. TBH i sent off my first carbs to a pro cleaner who also rebuilt them at the same time and he was amazed at the amount of crud that came out!!£100 well spent i got my own little ultrasonic cleaner now and had my latest carbs vapour blasted inside and out! hope that helps BTW to the forum
