as with all custom applications, modifications would be necessary. eve thought of modding the original seat? try RK leighton and ask them what you are thinking of doing, they can remold the foam and recover the seat pan

give it a tune up first, check timing and valves. carb could need overhauling if the above doesn't work. get yourself a manual and read the troubleshooting section too

Granted he should have let you know before he commenced work, just don't go back there again and buy your self a multimeter and test for power for the speedo. check connections and the sender unit. (not familiar about the bike BTW)

possibly the starter has been left running when the bike has started, which in effect, has "burnt the basta' oot" as you say in Scotland

the xs400 has 2 of these and have rubber bungs put in. must be something to do with machining in the factory
