Another toy... ?
Hiya peeps. in relation to my previous thread where i asked about the reliability/rideability of the FJ1200, i have started looking elsewhere, my only apprehension about the FJ is that its only got a 5 speed box, last thing i rode that had a 5 speed box was the DT and that felt like it really needed a 6th gear. so, i have set myself a criteria, and am now looking for a bike which can meet it for when its time to let the XJ go. 1: Must be able to buy one for under £1000 2: Must be able to do 300+ miles in comfort 3: Must be capable of cruising at 90-100mph 4: must have a 6 speed box would be nice if i could find a yamaha aswell, all my bikes so far have been yam (apart from the Jawa, but that never really got ridden), would prefer an older bike as you dont seem to see many older bikes around any input/thoughts/constructive comments would be appreciated - Foameh x

You aint doing it right BWJ, its not the size of the engine in your bike that matters, its the size of the balls in your leathers! imagine my XJ600 with a 1300 lump... ooh that would be nice...

Ebay rip off merchants!!
on the plus side, XJ parts are cheap thats probably because they are so many of them, but ive never seen another XJ600 on the road...

Motorbike Covers
ive got an oxford one on my XJ, before that it was on my DT more than 2 years ive had it), its still watertight, rolls up nicely and can be stowed in a backpack or tailpack, best £20 i ever spent, the ellastic is getting a bit loose now because its old but there are little eyelets in the bottom which i put a piece of rope through to tie it down under the bike no holes for the chain though, just put it on before you but the cover on

Which engine will fit a DT50mx without much hassle?
sounds exactly likemine, but 3 years younger used engines can be found on evilbay for about £50, its hard to tell exactly what you need until you can strip it down and see the real extent of the damage

Yamagod ???
unloading crabs?... you should get that seen too methink :/

Newb without a bike yet
DT is the way forward, i had the 50MX (mk 2 monoshock) and loved it, wish to god i never sold that bike!. well worth their money, if you can change oil on a car you can sure as hell manage it on a DT, will give you years of noble service if you maintain it

First big bike
Yamaha XJ600, bought mine for £400 with 37k on the clock, ive not had any trouble with it since ive been riding it, parts are dirt cheap, restrictors are available, they top out at about 130mph but comfortable enough at 70-80, and you dont see very many on the streets nowadays plus its a yam, 'nuff said

UK to NI, cheapest way?
im sure that VBH would have a new favourite if she saw my stretch and as for my identity, i intend to remain anonymous in accordance with the JAP, im sure i can pass as a librarian or something, aslong as i dont get quizzed on the works of shakespear... na wait, maybe i will be a florist, that could work so if you happen to be traveling through NI early-mid 2011, and you see a spotty teenager stood in the pissing rain next to a vintage XJ loaded with luggage, spare a thought for foamy oh, and the NW200 is a no go afraid, im busy with work

UK to NI, cheapest way?
fuck the Newtownards idea, may aswell do the whole f*ckin lot, mid-end of july, week off work, venture around the whole country, why not?, i wanted to do it on the DT, i had aspirations of doing it on the Jawa, but screw it i got the XJ and im going for it, no matter what anyone says im getting out of this crooked country i am willing contracted to serve with my life, even if its just for a week. panniers, tankbag and tailpack, sleep rough next to the bike, nothing but a camera and a few tins of beans and some nickelback on the headphones. its been a bad dayweekmonth at work, not happy with my life as it is and im currently in the process of emptying my fridge of all my beer

PASSED
Well done mate, (i know, im late, sorry...) get yourself an XJ600, i paid £400 for mine, it does 120mph, 100 miles on £10 of fuel, heated grips, Mmmmm... and the fact is if i drop it under a bus it doesnt really owe me anything (i would still be gutted though, i love that bike, not as much as my old DT though)

Newtownards is the first town im heading to, would have thought it would be easier to get to from belfast, but if its going to take me an hour to get through belfast i may aswell go from Carinryan to Larne, cheers 2Wheels, you saved me about £90 in ferry fees from Liverpool - Belfast

Which engine will fit a DT50mx without much hassle?
Sadly, as mentioned above you are very limited as to what engines you can put in it, unless you can find a DT80 engine, the 125 would probably be a bit too much, dont forget that you are riding with drum brakes and as i well know they are not the best. strip that engine down, its well worth it, haynes manuals and walkthroughs are available to help you, the parts are dirt cheap and readily availble on eBay/bitzforbikez e.t.c and you will learn a lot about how the engine works. failing that, name your price and i'll have it off your hands

Kev upgrades his LC
you need a frame with a bit more substance... say, a Jawa 640 frame... it jsut so happens i have one in the carpark if your interested? but yeh, wasnt of a nice bike... would be fun to ride until the rear end falls off anyway...
