  1. Cynic and Drewps: did you send the tank off or do it yourself? and what did you use? just the sealant or the pre-treat stuff aswell? to sum the day up, ive established the engine turns over and most of the electrics work (will change the front sidelight and figure out why the horns dont work tomorrow), the tank and tank surrounding fairings have been removed, the ignition has been sent off with a 50/50 chance of a usefull key being produced for the sum of £20, the rear brake mechanism has been freed and established the fact i may need new rear brake shoes, the seat has been removed and various restoration companies contacted within the oxford area to see if they can menufacture/repair my existing seat pan, seat cover has been sourced, various alluminium and chrome parts restored to shiny condition, front tyre sourced, LH riders footpeg sourced, Givi rack removed for refurbishment, rear fairings and light removed and battery replaced. a rather a productive day, hopefully tomorrow: more ally/chrome restored to shiny condition, rest of fairings removed for refinishing /repainting, engine check and run, headlight surround source, airbox removed, components and turbo removed for examination pre-engine run, silencers(whats left of) removed and evaluated, front brake system removed ready for evaluation and reconditioning, not to mention a few other bits and pieces to do
  2. i aint payin a hundred quid for four bits of rubber!... they can stay sealed up with electrical tape!
  3. it makes me feel happy in my trousers
  4. you will be lucky, been looking for some for my '89 XJ600 and they seem to be rare as rocking horse shite
  5. cheers Cynic, looks like just the job that stuff, its now on my shopping list, i reckon it should be roadworthy by the end of august
  6. nah the key we were given was a different pattern to the lock set, but for the sake of £20 i had it sent off to be done, its a 50/50 chance they can do it but if they cant i wont be charged, i have bought a blank which fits the lock but no way of cutting it. anyhoo, ive just been polishing a few parts, rubbed the tank down and i think its just weeping at the corner of the tank so hopefully some sort of tank sealant will sort that out (petseal?)
  7. Fairings are mostly off and doesn't seem to be as bad as first thought, managed to rig up a temporary ignition switch and get power on, everything works but the horn and front sidelight, filled it with fresh oil, engine turns over but until I can find another plug cap I won't be running it, givi rack is off and will be repainted shortly, rear brake mechanism has been dismantled and freed, Standby for pics
  8. i certaintly will do drewps, good thing is i have internet whilst im away so i can browse fleabay and order items that can be sent to my home address, may have to wait as because of a disagreement with paypal im overdrawn a fair bit... Update: Took the ignition barrell to my local branch of timpsons after ringing around my other local lockys to no avail, they agreed to send it away as none of the mployees in store had the skill to do it in-store, so it should be back by the end of next week unfortunately i will be away
  9. im away from the 12th of may until the end of july/early august, so i wont be working on the bike until i got back. this bike will be stripped down to the frame, re-powder coated, re chromed and all stainless hex bolts installed so as to look as original as possible but without rusting only number i can see is on the inside of the plastic housing... all it says is "8"
  10. cant get the lock out OG, need to know how to get the barrel out of the plastic housing, will call yamaha in the morning and see what they can do for me failing that im taking the ignition assembly down the lockys
  11. im keeping this bike as original as possible, hence i will be using the whole original lockset if possible, will take it down to my local locky in the morning and see if they can knock up a key, but then theres no guarantees it will fit all the other locks
  12. sorry bout that my camera didnt focus well on the closeup, doesnt seem to be any plastic tabs so to speak its just the barrel and the piston, is it likely i need to punch it out using a drift or something?
  13. i dropped some oil down the plug 'oles and rocked it backward and forward to turn it over and get nice and lubed up. now, these keys... ignition barrell is out... where do i go from here? have stripped it right down to the bare barrel but i cant seem to get it out of the plastic housing? As soon as i can get it to a point where i can apply power to it i can check everything works and see what else needs doing, i can also get the seat off and start stripping it down so it would be nice to get the keys before i go away so im not waiting for them when i get back
  14. well ive taken some fairings off, removed that battery (needless to say, sulphated to f*ck, theres rust on the bottom of the tank which has turned sticky, i suspect its leaking just drained the oil and its black in colour, not sure why its just the sight glass which has turned milky, i have the frame and engine numbers so would yamaha be able to make me a key from that info? failing that tomorrow i will unplug the ignition switch, put fresh oil in it and fire the bastard up... then avoid the various bits and pieces being thrown by the neighbours (silencer is rotten, remember...)
  15. Cheeky bugger, the first 5 pics were after id washed it! anyone know if i could get a new key through yamaha?, ive got the frame/engine numbers and everything, oil filter is on order, brake rebuild kits are on order for the calipers, got some HT cable but need to find a plug cap as one of them was missing Merv: the "coburn & hughes" has now been covered with a sticker saying "My other toy has tits"
  16. Well what can i say, what started as a post-pub ebay "browse" ended up with me and my dad picking up the XJ650 Turbo from hemel Hempstead this morning story goes it belonged to an emergency response rider who had a heart attack 12 years ago and laid the bike up under a tarp in his garden, sadly he passed away on boxing day and the bike was listed on ebay by his widow, (where after several pints of bitter, i purchased it), so on the back of the sportage it went and after an hour and half (and a burger king) we arrived in hungerford where it was washed off and all the rotten bits assesed. It has 19k on the clock (believed to be original) and a Givi top box mount, so far the parts i have identified as needing work are: Brakes are ceised and need rebuilding Keys we were given dont fit Seat is rotten, the bottom has rusted away to nothing Right hand silencer has rusted through and is now in two pieces Battery obviously needs replacing (have a spare i bought for the XJ600 which will probably work) front tyre needs replacing as sidewall is cracked Oil needs changing, it is mostly water Left hand footpeg is missing Carbs need stripping down and cleaning as throttle is very stiff Most metallic parts need respraying/powder coating. but for £230 i didnt eexpect anything mint, should give me something to do during the winter months, will be updating this thread (sticky pwease?...) but not for a while as i am out of the country with work until the end of June Pics:
  17. And rest assured the camera will be waiting when I pick it up, don't expect it to be pristine though its been laid up under tarp in a garden for 10 years... But only 18k on the clock!
  18. Oh, and I don't work at mcds', that's just where all the rudebois meet to race there 1 litre saxos up the dual carriageway
  19. Bet your ass I will bwj!, will be a couple of months before I start as am out of the country for two months
  20. No chance of loosing interest with this one, it has a friggin turbo! Think how much street cred that will give me at the mcdonalds car park! Well anyway I bought it for £232.50, waiting on a time and day to pick it up
  21. Oh I won't be riding it back, taking the sportage up with a trailer on the back,
  22. Fairs, cheers for the info lads, it will be a long term full strip and clean/restore kinda thing, i just like the look of it... and being able to say my bike has a turbo Insurance is £415 3rd party only though ... watch this space because tomorrow (with a bit of luck) i may be on my way to pick it up
  23. Hey again peeps Now the Jawa has gone im looking for a new toy... got my eye on a 650 Turbo but are they any good? any known faults or things to look out for? Any advice appreciated... as always - Foameh xX
