  1. to the forum Hi Richie, I guess the cylinder 1 running rich is at idle ? if so you need to spend a while playing with the mix screw if not I would guess some engine problems on cyl #1, which may be the case as you indicate the bike is 'running off' (like a pile of poo ?). When you balanced the carbs was the adjustment cyl 1 ~ 2 difficult to do .. did you have to keep altering the idle screw mid point of the balance adjustment & did cyl#1 have a lower reading to cyl#2. Did you make sure that the yics tool was a firm fit & tightend up, if not the balance will just go out the window as the guages will read very simular across all 4 cylinders. let us know how the bike is set up ! Regards Jim
  2. Hi Merv I guess David would not see the 'vintage' look of the fender ! Regards Jim
  3. Hi Cynic, My FS1 indicates 62~65 mph in perfect conditions with a 70cc big bore on and the piston does have keystone rings but I guess this type of ring would increase compression, as the compression would be obtained from other factors, but it would maintain the compression better than std type rings Regards Jim
  4. And of top of that they can still have a cigar/cigarette in their bar us plebies have been banned from that practice so perhaps they should align with us & if they have a ciggi in their pub & get caught (you guessed it) criminal record & a DNA swab to be held on file for the full term ... as they are dodgie you need to hold this info just in case they offend again you no the things ... rape, BANK ROBBERY etc Regards Jim
  5. I thought that was a wide screen TV ! Regards Jim
  6. Hi first off to the forum TX/XS500 not starting ... hmmmm can you expand on the starter working & not turning the engine over ? does the starter motor spin and the engine not ? or do you just get a 'click' when you press the start button ? if you just get the 'click' have you tried using the kick start in order to start the bike ? when we have this sorted we can work out where to look next Regards Jim
  7. Hi Cynic, the LC's did but perhaps Yamaha at the time were looking after the after market supliers of Allen bolts and also had a 'good deal' on all those pan head screws !!!! Regards Jim
  8. Hi Cynic, the XS motor came as standard with Allen bolts ! the O.E were oil blacked and looked good against the silver cases .. tbh the bolts to the rear left hand tended to sieze up and caused problems when all you needed to do was replace the broken clutch cable !!! Regards Jim
  9. Hi Lynn, not a problem just fire away to the forum and you will get the answer ... btw do you need a builder to fix the wall ? Regards Jim
  10. Hi Alec, it could be the pooper scooper reference !!! perhaps you could use the old YB fender for that perpose ! Regards Jim
  11. Hi Gary, in a word ... nope... Regards Jim
  12. Hi Andy/Scooby ? if you have rings of different thickness the grooves in the correct piston would dictate on the correct order. Imust say tho back in the 70's/80's the thiner ring was fitted to the top of the piston Regards Jim
  13. Nice FZ750 pure sports I would guess it would be good to just do the 750 to std and not worry about using the FZ1000 running gear. Regards Jim
  14. Hi Merv, you could get some big old Richard the Thirds on that fender but i guess it would have rotted out under that use also ! Regards Jim
  15. Hi Andy, after market rings will fit an aftermarket piston & not perhaps a Yamaha one through the reason you point out i.e different dimensions where as Yamaha ones were the same dimensions perhaps you need to get a piston from same factory ! Regards Jim
  16. What I was getting at is the bike maybe a 1980 model registered later so check that the 1980 & 1981 specs are close (I cannot remember too long ago !) .... thinking about it ... it way have been the end of March ... I'll research it and get back to you Regards Jim
  17. Hi there are others in fact any black wire within the loom is an earth so for example the problem may lie in the tail light wiring or that the h/l lamp shell bolts & earth wires have not been connected correctly .. the tag should go against the correct washer and not just down to the platic bits & a wrong size nut & bolt. These were just examples you will need to ensure every black wire does run to earth. Regards Jim
  18. Oh Ok how much of the bike did you take apart ? Now you have added that there is a chance your problem is down to a 'bad earth' Regards Jim
  19. Hi, I guess the wirring is well hacked about with if not check that the plug from your switch matches the wire colours on the loom. The green light indicates the bike is in neutral does it go out when you put the bike in gear ? Has your SR250 got a side stand ? In 1982 the laws were changed and new bikes had to be fitted with a side stand saftey switch, Yamaha in certain cases just removed the side stand & in others supplied ignition cut out switches to retro fit to bikes with side stands fitted. if you have a sidw stand check for a switch mounted by the side stand or on the handlebar clutch lever housing. If nothing is there check the KILL switch as if this is in the off position non of the ignition circut will work. Looking at the nuetral light comming on in the park postion I would guess you have something bodged or wired up incorrectly. Regards Jim
  20. Hi Paul, what you need is a Mobylette Luxamatic (normally bronze in colour) it had the vario belt drive & a 2 speed gearbox or variator as Moby called it .... My shop was about the last part distributor in the world for Motobecane/Mobylette and we sent NOS all over the world .. In some respects it was bad when Yamaha bought the factory & re branded it MBK as the original French designs were ditched in favour of Jap style production & bicycles ! Dead shame I used to love full borring a moby major/minor and decompressing it when comming up to zebra crossings just to make the old girls jump ! Regards Jim
  21. hhmmmm I don't think the Jawa is quite in the same league ! But the Jawa will be a good first bike to run on not to powerful but great for pulling wheelies ( do young men still do that ?). I had a '77 RD200DX which did the teenage thing & tbh I kept it until 1980 and could out run much larger machines. When you get the Jawa on the road you may find with it's lighter weight and the mods you will make to it (to get it to A: handle & B: perform better than stock) you will be able to run rings around the 'all the gear & no idea' brigade ! Regards Jim
  22. you missed the coconut ! ina korma !
  23. Hi Paul, as my MP is the proud owner of the said chandelier, I guess its a ride round to his gaff & see what we bought, but I would guess most, when all the data is looked at, have made 'mistakes'. Benefit fraud I reckon take their DNA & give um a criminal record ! Regards Jim
  24. Hi, 1981 was an odd time for bikes above 125cc and less than 350cc as the 125cc limit was looming up and the government add a 10% tax to imported vehicles (to safe guard BL .. & look what happend !) So some bikes registered in 1981 may be 1980 models (they weren't selling too well) registered before the 1 Mar 1981 in order to avoid the 10% tax. I guess there is little difference between the two but I would guess your bike is an 1980. by late 1983 Yamaha had loads of 1981 DT175's in stock and were offered to the trade as 'buy on get one free' as long as you bought an XJ750 in the same order these bikes were 1981 manufacture ! Regards Jim

    CPC

The European Union published a Directive in July 2003 that will require all category C and D licence holders to take part in 35 hours retraining every five years, in order to keep their entitlement to drive professionally. The Directive also gives details of a new initial training regime that new drivers must go through before they can drive professionally for the first time. This will have a major impact on driver testing, as the existing driving tests will be modified and lengthened to adapt to these requirements. The Directive will come into force across all EU Member States in 2008 for bus drivers, and 2009 for lorry drivers. The legislation for these requirements will be introduced into Northern Ireland during 2006. The legislation will state the minimum testing requirements for new drivers, as well as the process for obtaining periodic training. It will also include the deadlines by which existing drivers will have had to complete their first set of retraining. Hi I know the above statment applies to lorries & buses but I can see the European Union (if this works ok) passing the CPC down to C1,B & A catogories. Who fancies doing 35 hours training per 5 years in order to keep their licence, with regard to the C1 licence (most had these bundled with the B licence in the last centuary), if you wanted to hire a 7½ tonner would you need this CPC ? I'm not sure as I hold the lorry licence my firm are paying for my cpc but looking at the costs, if this filters down to other catagories, it may mean people who drive/ride 'dangerous' vehicles are subject to the same legislation. Regards Jim
