mikesxs the gas cap will need dismantling if you are lucky it is screwed together,if not you will need to remove the rivets and then replace with screws when you rebuild

A tdr or Rd powervalve o ring is the same i think, but the neutral switch is ths ame in the aircooled rd,s ad the part number is 93210-29147 if you go too the yamaha usa website they have all the parts lists for the bikes there. oh and go buy a triumph or norton one drip every 48 hours is 110% oil tight on them. one drip every 48 seconds is the factory norm from new Merv

81 xs400 shift shaft replacement
will it not drop down far enough too clear the clutch, if you have too remove the clutch get the correct tool to hold the centre, if not you will break the basket and the tool will still seem very cheap compared to the replacing basket merv

Online parts ordering - any recommendations?
TBH i would go too a battery specialist/motor factor, some online stores look cheap but by the time you add postage then some you need to buy the acid seperatly it does not work out much cheaper, google battery specialist and your location to find one, oh and look for a decent make one cheap ones are a false economy, the previous owner of my TDR put a cheap battery in it about 15 months ago it is not holding it charge very well now and was not a year after i got it, does not matter cos that is kickstart, but if it had an electric leg it would be a pain in the ass merv

powder coated xs engine
Campbell i do not advise it on an aircooled engine, i had many problems with my RD400 seizing til i fitted non coated barrels,i hadbought a set of coated rebored barrels at great expanse and they were knackered within 600 miles and my local powdercoaters that i use now said they would not touch an engine

Barky call in mate i just read this news story
TRIBUTES are being paid to Scotland today after the entire country laughed itself to death. The alarm was first raised at around 4pm as thousands of phone calls and text messages went unanswered. Small groups of volunteers from Berwick-Upon-Tweed and Carlisle ventured north only to find houses full of dead people gathered around still blaring television sets. As RAF helicopters flew over deserted city streets, it was clear that the whole country had suffered a catastrophic abdominal rupture. Wayne Hayes, a special constable from Northumberland, said: "We went into one house in Dunbar and found three men sitting on the sofa with huge smiles on their faces, still holding cans of tennents. They seemed to be at peace." He added: "In a house near Edinburgh we found a man face down on the living room floor with his trousers and pants round his knees. "It seems he may have been showing his bare buttocks to the television when he keeled over." Roy Hobbs, a civil engineer from Northampton, said: "I got a call from my friend Ian in Stirling at about 3:40PM "He was already laughing when I answered the phone, but after about 25 minutes of the most vigorous and uncontrollable hilarity, everything suddenly went very quiet." Moving tributes are already being placed along the Scotland-England border with many mourners opting to leave a simple bag of chips or a deep fried bunch of flowers.

76 DT250 smoking
watch your gear oil level if that goes down the crank seals are shot, also fuel will get into the gearbox, and if the points side seal is gone air will get into the crankcase causing a weak mixture and seizures in a very short time, also if the fuel leaks out among the points it can cause and explosion blowing expensive covers off the engine, personally after 20 years of standing i would replace the seals as mater of course, imagine if you had stored a pair of rubber bots for 20 years near fuel and oil, they would not be much good i reckon, and i do not think you need to do a full engine tear down to replace the seals on these engines , i maybe wrong though merv
