well a stroker is a good starting point for an amateur restorer i reckon i have doe 3 aircooleds now and have a 4th in the pipeline, the lc is a little more modern with water cooling etc but no horrible valves/cams/ etc. + spares are reasonably freely available and plentiful, aleks Lc forum is the place to go loads of helpful folks on their Norbo on there seems to stock loads of spares and is very reasonable, though steer clear of the backyard if you are of a nervous disposition here is the link lc forum merv

Yup your are correct 1A3-66 sounds a bit fishy to me also if you look at the number it should be stamped in a serrated/grooved area not a smooth one if it is smooth the previous number has very likely been filed off Merv

Couriering Crabs 11 tons at a time around europe in a 44 ton artic fitted with a mixture of michelin (useless in wet on the drive axle) bridgestone, yokohama, and a kumho, doing approx 3000 km,s a week merv

hmm i googled round and black once it had nothing to do with tyres but some large round and black cheeks site has gone now but round and brown does the same trick
  9. mervin replied to jonbott's post in a topic in Yamaha Customs
Ok yes you need to ride according to your tyres, but having to brake on a wet bend is not the time to find out you made the wrong choice buying the diyung ditchfinders, i know after having a new Rd250 in the seventies and it was fitted with early yokhama or bridgestone tyres which turned wet roads into a nightmare, things have improved a lot since merv

Is it actually turning over most modern bikes don't crank if the kill switch is off, if it turning over whip a plug out and hold it with insulated pliers against the head on bare metal to see if you get a spark, if it sparks it is very likely fuel Merv
  11. mervin replied to BrianMcC's post in a topic in Classics
i know about stupid little things kill switches etc spent an hour trying to start a bike one day (big honda single on electric start) changed plug checked wiring gve up dug out old RD 250 that had been stood under a cover in the garden for a month started second kick honda became a swear word, went out on 250 did the job i had too do got home and turned the fuel tap to reserve on the honda and it started straight away, had been away in the truck for a fortnight and forgot it was low on fuel, as well as an XS650 owner i know through the Rd forum (Snowy, you met him recently Drewpy) spent ages trying to start his XS to discover the tank was empty merv
  12. mervin replied to BrianMcC's post in a topic in Classics
It does have petrol in the tank ? turn tap to reserve ? could be plugs but you would think it would attempt to start on the other cylinders Merv
  13. Fit a scottoiler and stop arguing about overpriced waterdisplacer in a can, WD40 is overpriced i use a cheaper version to waterproof bits of the bike/as releasing fluiid but chain no way, chain saw chain oil is good does not flick around a badly as ornery oil and is a lot cheaper than aerosol cans of chain lube that last 20 seconds, Merv

I Kmow stuf all about couriering in london, and admit too it, but know one thing you dont go around a corner and find the road 2 ins deep in cowshit in london. 5 years of riding bikes too work in my in the country in my teens taught me a lot about reading road conditions etc. oh and included one slide up he road on a shit sliick that i had put there earlier in the day myself and forgot about at the pub ended up sitting on my arse following the fissy up the road on its side Merv

Taper rollers do fit i have em on both my running Rd,s but you will need to put an extra o ring in the bottom headlight ear rings. the ones that go in the neutral light switch do the trick, problem is the bearings sit a little higher than the originals, but i honestly cannot say you will see much difference between originals and the tapers handling wise. so fit which ever you feel happiest with doing Merv
  16. Gotta agree with ya there OG Merv
  17. thinking about selling bikes and getting a jetski maybe more useful merv

  20. Avoid petseal it peels off again the stuff por 13 i beleive from frost is good you get a kit to clean and derust the tank with it make sure yuo do the job properly the first time no short cuts it is a bugger to get out again i know after doing a tank with petseal that started too peel off Merv

  23. mervin replied to drprunty's post in a topic in Classics
just one of those things that happen somehow, you could try holding something near the sprockets to see if they are running off centre, but if it is too bad you may have to replace the chain, all you can do is check the slack at the tightest point in the chain run otherwise merv

Falase neutrals tel me about em always seem to happen at the worst possible moment just when dropping a cog for powering out of a corner, only real cure a scooter with belt drive i remember poodling along a straight in the seventies on me RD250 minding my own business when i was passed by another rd took off after him like a scalded cat caught him on a series of bends then missed a gear and lost everything, merv

Two aliens landed in the Arizona desert near a gas station that was closed for the night. They approached one of the gas pumps and the younger alien addressed it saying, 'Greetings, Earthling. We come in peace. Take us to your leader.' The gas pump, of course, didn't respond. The younger alien became angry at the lack of response. The older alien said, 'I'd calm down if I were you.' The younger alien ignored the warning and repeated his greeting. Again, there was no response. Annoyed by what he perceived to be the pump's haughty attitude, he drew his ray gun and said impatiently, 'Greetings, Earthling. We come in peace. Do not ignore us this way! Take us to your leader or I will fire!' The older alien again warned his comrade saying, 'You probably don't want to do that! I really don't think you should make him mad.' 'Rubbish,' replied the cocky, young alien. He aimed his weapon at the pump and opened fire. There was a huge explosion. A massive fireball roared towards them and blew the younger alien off his feet and deposited him a burnt, smoking mess about 200 yards away in a cactus patch. Half an hour passed. When he finally regained consciousness, he refocused his three eyes, straightened his bent antenna, and looked dazedly at the older, wiser alien who was standing over him shaking his big, green head. 'What a ferocious creature!' exclaimed the young, fried alien. 'He damn near killed me! How did you know he was so dangerous?' The older alien leaned over, placed a friendly feeler on his crispy friend and replied, 'If there's one thing I've learned during my intergalactic travels, you don't want to mess with a guy who can loop his penis over his shoulder twice and then stick it in his ear.'
