Ajdoyle77
I have an '83 xs 400 seca (with the monoshock rear). I am doing a cafe style mod job. I'd like to upgrade to twin discs in the front. What do I need for forks? Caliper? I'm not familiar with Yamaha, don't know anything about the interchangability. Also, are there any decent upgrades for the rear monoshock? Front twin discs, XS500/ 650 bits should do it, unless you can find a front end from newer bike that goes straight into your triple trees, as for rear shock again take a look around measure the shock and see if a later bike one fits I:e xj600 possibly merv

Ajdoyle77
Thanks for the link. I couldn't find translation for some key words. Here's what I got: 1. Fork of the Yamaha XJ550 2. Rotor of the XS 400 12E (identical care!) 3. Bremmszange one from the left side of the XJ550. (Identical care!) 4. a longer Hohlschraube to the distributor. 5. Handbremmszylinder de XJ550. My guess is: Bremmszange = caliper? Hohlschraube = brake line? Handbremmszylinder = master cylinder? Can anyone confirm?
Moderator mervin Posted April 30, 2008 Moderator Share Posted April 30, 2008 Drewps Dont know bog all about modern XS,s so i stand corrected anfd thanks for doing that my specialist subject RD 250/350/400 aircooled before 1981 A good way of translating parts is go to german ebay enter the name of the part you are tryingto translate in the search box and hey presto you should have a picture merv ebay de Bremmszange = caliper? yes Hohlschraube = brake line? No quite literally hole bolt, but banjo bolt too us, to take 2 lines you will need another line of course Handbremmszylinder = master cylinder? yes
Ajdoyle77
Thanks. Now, I bought forks from an '82 xj550 off ebay. They won't work. the 550 forks have an offset axle hole, where the 400 has a centered hole. Anybody out there need a pair of xj550 forks?

You're only supposed to use the caliper side of the 550 forks, so it wouldn't line up. I may email him, or I may give up on that mod all together... joecool85
I have an XJ550 front fork setup (w/19" wheel) on my 1982 XS400S, it works great. Bike came that way though, so I actually don't know a ton about the mod. It took a while to figure out what the front end came off from lol. Sounds like those forks came off an XJ550 MAXIM...rather than the SECA I rode this for 13 years & know 'em pretty well..... Put around 40k on the clock on this 1 before I traded it in on my 3rd 550 I'd love to have the 400 back now.......Great bike......FYI....EBC pads & a steel-braided line can make a World of difference with that front brake ya know?
