wow...

okay, thanks. i like our simple registration. on the papers if you have a 1982 it says "1982" and so on...

The uk prefix is designed so you will know the approx year of a vehicle by looking at the licence plate without the need to look at the documents.

Do they have the year on the licence plate in the USA ?

nope...

we used to have a new plate every year but in Michigan that stopped in 1979. we JUST this year retired that plate and went to a new color scheme...

now we have about 900 different plates. the basic is white with a blue band across the top. they have 7 letters or numbers (standard combo is 3 letters and 4 numbers). two variations come into play in that you can get one with any of the 15 public universities, 7 special fund raising plates (children welfare, lighthouse conservation, veteran services, wildlife conservation among others). now double that because we have a 2nd plate with a silhouette of the detroit skyline morphing into the wilderness of the upper peninsula going from blue to green. those dont allow you to add your school choice or special fund...

on either plate you can get your branch of service (Army, Air Force, Marine Corp or Navy) as a veteran plate or with a military conflict (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Panama, Persian Gulf) or POW plate, Amateur Radio, Purple Heart (combat wounded) or Medal of Honor, Silver Star or Bronze Star medal awards...

if you pick either of these plates withOUT the vet or other school etc, you can apply for plates with whatever combo you desire. example: my new (to me) 82 seca 750 just got a 'vanity plate'. i wanted 82 XJ but it was taken so i got 82750 (year and size). i am ordering 81550 for my 81 maxim 550. they are the white with blue plates...

That all sounds very complicated - makes our system seem simple

What you have to remember with the GB system (not UK as Northern Ireland does it`s own thing) is that a staandard year letter plate is issued according to the date of FIRST registration as a new vehicle.

So you can get older year machines 1st registered later than they were actually made or imported.

You can transfer a number indicating an OLDER age to your vehicle, but CANNOT transfer a number to a vehicle that would make it appear to be younger than it actually is. (based on it`s original date of first registration.)

TO Mervin...........The reg list you posted is good, but remember that when the "six month" issue scheme was introduced on 1st March 1999.(T) the subsequent date changes Were changed from August to September Making "V" 1st Sept 99 to 28 Feb `00 and so on until the Year NUMBER style started on 1st September 2001 "51".
