Posted May 4, 20195 yr hi people. i have looked all over and cant seem to find the answer. so. i recently bought a 1989 XJ600. and i noticed on the fuel tap it says on, reserve and prime... question is what is the prime position for and should i use it? i have only ever seen on, off and reserve on bikes so im guessing its something the older bikes had. any help would be greatly appreciated.
May 5, 20195 yr Hi, well the PRIME is used only when you have emptied the carbs ie had them apart or run out of fuel. the rest of the time just ignore it. You might need it if the bike has not been used for a long while and the carbs have drained down but that can take months to happen.
May 5, 20195 yr To further Slices' answer, you have vacuum carbs on your bike so petrol feed should only occur when the engine is running, therefore no requirement for an off position
May 5, 20195 yr Author ahh great stuff. thankyou guys. i wasnt sure if i should use it when using the choke or on startup. thanks for the info. prob saved me a headache later on
