yamaha yr1 1968/ seals and bearings? bottom end rebuild.

Hello friends,

anyone have any experience rebuilding one of these bottom ends?

basically just wondering if ill need any special tools, anything rare?

any pitfalls? or things to know?

also, anyone know the size of the seals and bearings- or where to get them? i tried emailing HVCC and they never responded.

Aye Elliot, when you remove old seals and bearings, take them to your local bearing supplier , they"l read the numbers on them, or measure them,, :yeah:

The only tool av ever used on a two-stroke is a puller type thing to pull the crank into the casing, u-tube has lots of engine build videos,

u can make tool or buy it , "Tusk" is makers name,,[ usa made too]

thanks for chiming in, I'm familiar with rebuilding 2 stroke bottom ends- usually single cylinder and typically more popular models!

i will be following the protocol you mentioned!

Hey guys! long time no talk.

so i still haven't ripped this baby open yet- been slammed with my work.

anyways, was doing some research and it seems like the crank rebuild on these obscure beasts is a bit ridiculous. HVCcycles quoted me 1000$ which seems very very pricey.

do you guys have experience with super hard to find, very pricey big end bearings? and conrods?

Yes and no. I have a 1965 YA-6 Santa Barbara.

The crank parts are not hard to find LINKY

Type the part numbers into fleabay and some bargains will come up. $1000 sounds a lot but you have 2 of most things so double the cost. I think another thing is the support for smaller, older, 2 strokes your side of the pond. In the UK there are many specialists who would work on this however, in the US small 2 stroke bikes appear to be of limited value.

UK crank rebuild prices can be seen here LINKY It may be worth emailing them and asking for a full rebuild price as it may work out cheaper - espesially if you can source and send the parts for the rebuild.
