wild foamy Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Well peeps, i picked up what i thought was a Mk1 RD50MX only to find that its an RD80MX! In need of lots of TLC and missing some vital parts, but no doubt there are precious few of these in existance now. one of the biggest problems im finding is the engine, 80 units are hard to come by and although the DT50 shared engines with the RD50, GT50 and TY50 bikes im wanting to find out if the crankcases, the primary gear ratios are the same for all models of DT50 and DT80 so hopefully i can use the same gearbox. does anyone have access to a microfiche or parts catalogue and could shed some light on this? the shopping list is growing, but wont be doing anything until i can shift grouchs XT...
Moderator drewpy Posted February 21, 2014 Moderator Posted February 21, 2014 need to go on the 2 stroke forum, there a member on there who lives in Spain!
wild foamy Posted March 8, 2014 Author Posted March 8, 2014 Now have indicator lenses, flasher relay, a TY engine block (missing barrel and intake manifold), carb. gonna get everything pieced back together and get it stripped/painted over a weekend at some point.
Moderator Cynic Posted March 8, 2014 Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 As I remember it foams the RD80 was a water pumper. Lil baby lc unit designed for the 80 and only the 80...... May use the 50 gearbox with diff outer cases but be easier to find Graeme Norton a girl friend. May be wrong though. I am well into my 5aday on the apple juice, hic
Moderator Airhead Posted March 8, 2014 Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/1278411/ Why a TY50 engine Steve? Thats a trials bike and will be geared so!
Moderator Cynic Posted March 8, 2014 Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 Ahhh crap, see 5 a day is bad for your judgement...
Moderator Airhead Posted March 8, 2014 Moderator Posted March 8, 2014 Ahhh crap, see 5 a day is bad for your judgement... Nahh you're right mate, later ones were LC, maybe the MX is the clue...I dunno heres another, they have different wheels to the LC's too http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?um=1&newwindow=1&sa=N&hl=en&tbm=isch&tbnid=y-S_FNCxwblk-M%3A&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fdatabikes.com%2Finfophoto%2Fyamaha%2Frd_80_mx-1983.html&docid=jER3xPod31rfxM&imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fdatabikes.com%2Fimgs%2Fa%2Fc%2Fj%2Fr%2Fn%2Fyamaha__rd_80_mx_1983_1_lgw.jpg&w=640&h=478&ei=XagbU4S3LMaThgeIvoD4Aw&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=4781&page=1&start=0&ndsp=16&ved=0CFkQrQMwAA
dt502001 Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 it looks alot like a old 77 /80 yz motorcross motor to me. Try cross referencing the crank/ trany parts.
wild foamy Posted March 9, 2014 Author Posted March 9, 2014 the DT50, RD50, and TY50 share the same engine cases, the clutch and stator covers are a different style on the TY but are interchangeable between all, im not 100% sure about the YZ but visually they look the same and getting them shipped over from the states is fookin expensive. according to haynes, the DT/RD50 and DT/RD80 primary transmissions are the same ratio, it is only the front and rear sprocket ratios that differ. TBH, aslong as it fits in there and it runs im not that fussed.
jimmy Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Foamy Would this be of help http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RD-80-LC-complete-running-engine-10-000-miles-10X-RD80LC-Yamaha-electrics-Cdi-/151248478822?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item23371ca266
wild foamy Posted March 9, 2014 Author Posted March 9, 2014 Nah its an LC, mine is definately an air cooled model cases for the LC have a water pump underneath the oil pump housing.
lallasro Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 why you want to find an engine?! you need just 2 pedals
wild foamy Posted March 9, 2014 Author Posted March 9, 2014 this is true... maybe it could be a new eco-friendly bike project!
