Hi all , I'm Steve a new member on here that is close to clinical depression because my Dt won't give me a good spark! . I bought the bike off e bay and it ran fine in in the howling rain and wind for about 35 miles . I indicated to pull off into the services and the bike just died. It was pulling well in every gear and compression seemed good. I have since replaced the coil , plug and cap , checked all connectors and cleaned them , and fitted a used Cdi box that had 8 wires . One of these was linked into a black wire that I have since cut off so I'm left with 7 wires. Still I am getting the faintest spark that dies not even shock to touch . I noticed some leakage from the flywheel cover and when I removed it a fair amount of whitish / clear liquid came out ( no jokes please ) , I think this was a combination if petrol and oil ? I have yet to source a flywheel puller which is on order but want to ask if this oil could be responsible for damaging the stator coils stopping a decent pulse being made to the CDI box ? Is this a crank seal that is leaking or gearbox seal ? I have read loads of posts on here where Paul airhead seems to be the genius of all things DT related , and would also like to know what parts may be broken on the stator , I know replacement coils are available from Electrex world , thanks Paul , please help its driving me too despair. I will post some pics of the bold which is totally original and in blue , with a round swingarm. I learnt to ride on one of these aged 9 years old when my feet couldn't touch the ground . I was never allowed to ride it properly alone without my big brother on the back and always wanted to own mg own to reminisce and see what the bike could really do , I still think the bike looks shit hot ! Steve .

Should have added a little intro , my names Steve and I live in Manchester , I've always been into Yamaha s since I learned to ride on a blue and white Dt 175 mx aged just 9 , I've owned an FS1 e my first bike that I paid £8 pounds for off a mate !! I was only 13 at the time and remember the the bike looking fantastic in with yellow speed blocks on the tank and a little race pipe ! It was good for over 55 mph , how I wish I had kept that bike ! I then owned an RD 125 LC Ypvs which I loved before I sold this and spent all the money watching man city in the banana army season ! My next bike was a 2001 R6 , what a step up from a 125 ! I thought I had made a mistake it was so fast but after several European trips I got used it . I sold the R6 , ( I know I shouldn't ) and bought a K7 Gixxer 750 .. I love the Gixxer but it hasn't made me lust after it like the R6 .. And now I have my Dt that is in very good condition but obviously not wanting to run just yet !! Steve

Sorry Steve, you got your second post in while I was composing my reply.

But, I still think that you are trying to write a letter that is to intense.

Keep it brief, people tend to get bored with to many lines.

It's like reading a page from a book.

Anyway, welcome to the forum Steve.

Looks like the very nice school Marm got in before me

I am going to move the thread into the workshop.

Well done Mr N

Lots of little issues here.

CDi of the wrong model (different wiring)

White emulsion normally means water in the oil. As it is aircooled it could have leaked in via the airbox which would have mucked up the carb a little. or got into the crank area and mixed with the 2 stroke

You should get away with the stator. Hopefully a good clean should do that.

The seals sound as they need changing. Often they seat OK when cold but don't have the flexibility when hot (and they are old) so start to suck in air

A strip down is the safest bet (and cheapest in the long term).

Greetings Steve fellow 79 DTMX owner

one of the first things I learned way way back was how riding in bad weather can conk out these things..I suggest you take of the flywheel, mark the stator position and take of the stator...shove it in the oven for a few hours on low, you need to gett it running again obviously before trying to address wher the clear white fluid come came from

You'll need to use your original CDI too...

Which region of Mcr are you in then? :D

Thanks for the many replies ! Airhead I live in Hyde Tameside , the Cdi was off a 1978 Dt American model , I've looked inside through the gaps in the cover and it looks fairly clean , I can put the other CDI back on , I can only see the faintest of sparks with the cap off the plug and a wire pushed on to the end of the coil lead grounded on the cylinder head , the air box has some holes drilled in that shouldn't be there but the filter looks ok ? Why would it just stop like that , I can only assume its an electrical fault somewhere ? Would the oil stop the stator working ?

Massive thanks to Paul aka Airhead , did all the tests with the multi meter and we find the brown power lead coming from the ignition stator coil was giving next to nothing , stator removed and a new coil will hopefully provide the missing spark !! Ill keep everyone posted and upload some pics of the bike when we get her running !

We got a good spark but inconsistent , it's not wanting to start , these things are sent to try us ! Paul reckons its a case of filing a bit off the stator to accept a new electrex world ignition coil that seems to be shorting out on the plate ! Massive thanks again to Airhead , if anyone can fix it ... My money's on him ! Thoughts anyone who may have had similar issues fitting a non Yamaha coil to the stator ?

Yeah it was trying (as in very trying)!!!

Steve, from looking at a pic on my computer I can say without doubt that I had it the other way round on mine and did some filing of the stator plate to clear the soldered terminal...I have now done this to yours so were good to go again...The genuine yam ones are expensive..cmsnl are asking 165 euros for one but there are several in the states for around £60...so for now we'll stick with this one me thinks ;)

gimme a ring tomorrow sometime

Hallelujah !! We have power ! And a sweet running DT back on the streets ! Airhead was spot on , filed a bit off the stator , refitted the Electrex coil to the stator and hey fookin presto , fired up first kick !! He should post a new nickname Doctor DT lol , nice one Paul , can't wait to take her for a spin ! Happy New Year everyone !!
