werxa
Hey guys, Just treated myself to my first cruiser....a 1991 Yamaha XV535 Virago.....matte black in colour and in need of TLC but I wanted a project that I could put my own stamp on while also commuting to work each day...and with this beauty, job done! Previously I'd been a sports bike man (Ducati's etc) but have fell in love with Harley's recently..due to family committments I could afford the £4k for a Harley so decided to try a cheaper cruizer and shelled out £775 for my Virago. I'm having a few issue with it starting in the morning.....the first two days I had it it was open to the elements and chose not to start after getting wet.....after getting home from work later that day, the sun had been out so the bike dried out and started first go!!! It is now under a cover but if it continues not to start after getting wet has anyone got any ideas but fixing the problem??? I can't carry a bike cover everywhere....we are in the UK after all !! Cheers in advance!!
neversaydie
Make sure all the earth connections are good and clean, try a basic bike service ie oil &filter/spark plugs/air filter, check all electrical connections for cleanliness an put a dab of wd40 on them, make sure that youve got a good battery on the bike. werxa
Cheers bud ! I will try the basic service this weekend.....battery might be an issue as the previous owner mentioned it but said it should be fine.....might replace just in case! Moderator DirtyDT Posted October 7, 2012 Moderator Share Posted October 7, 2012 With the winter coming it is best to keep an eye on the battery anyway or change it for some extra reassurance. A bike will normally be easier to start during the day as the ambient temperature will normally be higher. I am guessing that it is turning over but just not catching. A service wouldn't hurt. aitch52
G'day Werxa I've just bought a non starting Virago 535 from my mate out here in Thailand, having done some research it seems it is a well known problem with the bike. My symptoms are the motor turns over a couple of times and then stops. So it could be a number of things, the starter clutch, the rollers and springs or the idler gearing. It is fitted with a new battery already. Found this on the web the other day. It is an answer to a query to the video he posted. Basically he ran a heavy duty braided strap from starter mounting point to the casing, and then one from the other side of the casing to the negative pole on the battery. He claims that it gives a boost to the starter motor by providing it with a really good earth. Yup heavy braided strap from the back (ground) mounting bolt on the starter and I like to catch one bolt on the side of the engine too then the negative ( - ) on the battery. That seems to help the stator put out full power for some reason. This gets your starter clutch to engage quicker and keeps it from wearing or will make it hit anyway if it's only worn just a hair dawino6260 in reply to poltab7 1 day ago Anyway the bike is being delivered up here on Tuesday and I'll be able to diagnose the problem when the cover is off. Good luck with your starting issues. If you google Yamaha Virago 535 starter problems there is a lot of info Cheers Chris Aitch
