godslam Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I just got this bike from my grandpa. It was sitting up north for a few years since the last time it was used. Currently, it will start up and run for a bit, but after a few it bogs out. To me it seems like it's not getting enough gas. The carburetor has been cleaned out and I have checked pretty much everything else. My dad mentioned that the oil pump might not be working correctly, but I'm not sure how to tell. My guess is that it's just not getting gas though. Also, I messed something up, took off the crankcase to fix it and obviously lost all of the oil that was in it. I'm new to bikes and was wondering what kind of oil you put in a crankcase. Is it a specific type? If so, where would be a good place to get it? A Yamaha dealership or something? Another issue I have is that my air filter basically disintegrated and I wanted to just buy the material to put in it. Is this possible? Can someone PM me or link me to a place that has it? Thanks to anyone that replies. I've been really wanting to ride this thing around.

Sacha Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Thanks tons. I'll post in there and introduce myself. You are most welcome. And to the YOC! You'll find an abundance of information here. Also, nice pic of The Dude. Thanks! Nicked it from someone's photobucket account (actually I linked to it, so it's not like I totally stole it right?). Makes me want a white russian though.
Moderator Airhead Posted June 21, 2012 Moderator Posted June 21, 2012 any motorcycle specific engine oil is ok for the gearbox godslam, dont put car oil in it may cause clutch slip! I assume there is also an oil tank for the two stroke oil... This will be very useful though http://www.repairmanual.com/online/official-1970-yamaha-ht1-factory-service-manual-u-yam-s-ht1/

Yes, there is a separate one for the two stroke located under the seat. I'll look into buying that at a later time, I'm short on cash and trying to spend the least amount of money possible. Thanks tons. I'll just have to figure out what to use as an air filter now. The only ones I see for this bike at ~$40.
Moderator Airhead Posted June 21, 2012 Moderator Posted June 21, 2012 perhaps you can make something up yourself? dunno...never done it myself http://motorcycleproducts.co.uk/catalogue/filter-foam-p-8294.html
godslam Posted June 21, 2012 Author Posted June 21, 2012 perhaps you can make something up yourself? dunno...never done it myself http://motorcyclepro...oam-p-8294.html Never hurts to try... usually. Thanks for that link, I'll start looking elsewhere. Maybe I can find a place near me. Luckily I live in Michigan, so there's auto parts stores everywhere.
godslam Posted June 28, 2012 Author Posted June 28, 2012 perhaps you can make something up yourself? dunno...never done it myself http://motorcyclepro...oam-p-8294.html Ordered sponge and made my own filter. Bike is running amazingly, but electrical stuff seems to be the issue now. Sadly I've found out that the headlamp is discontinued. Luckily I live with someone that knows a bit about electrical wiring (plus I know a decent amount myself) and so I'll be doing a custom install using an LED, I think. Thanks for your help from before, Airhead.

godslam Posted June 28, 2012 Author Posted June 28, 2012 This may help while you get a manual. Pick your year LINKY Headlight LINKY That's the only one on eBay if I'm not mistaken. If it breaks, I'd literally have nothing to use then. So I'm going for LEDs. I'm gonna convert the AC power to DC, hook up two LEDs for high and low beams and hope for the best. As I said before, I have a buddy that knows what he's doing. Thanks for the links though. The first one will be quite helpful in the future in case I decide to rebuild anything.
Moderator Airhead Posted June 28, 2012 Moderator Posted June 28, 2012 you wont get enough light from an led
dt502001 Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 For 50 bucks my buddy just picked up a real nice UFO twin LED head light from the local yamy dealer. The lights look just like the ones used in fancy track lighting @ 2in round avaible every where. It come's complete and mounts with heavy rubber straps to the forks took me 10 min to install it and it looks sharp. You should be able to get one in the states for half that and its dam bright UFO make all kind of replacement plastic parts and there stuff is good any bike shop can set you up with one
