Hi all

I am about to strip a spare engine and am thinking of a re-con. Is replacing the internal seals in the engine a specialist job or can I diy it with care? I am thinking this because of advice regarding 2 srokes sitting for too long and the seals failing once started and warmed up. Is this true?

Cheers

If your handy with the spanners then you can do it yourself.

Aye the seals can fail if engine is sitting round for long time,,,,they get all hard an dried out,, BUT can you hook up the engine while its sitting on the floor and see will it start,,,,, be worth your time,,,,,mabey engine is ok as it is

I have had it running but not for a long enough distance for the engine to get hot so not too sure! Can you tell by looking at them or are they squeezed in ?

Geo " you can"t tell by looking, If its the L/h,seal[ geny side] it pull air thru, resulting in irregular idle. [ higher when warms up] if its R/h seal . it suck gearbox oil thru,

resulting in white heavy odd smelling smoke,,, also gear oil can be seen on crank ,when barrel &head off. :eusa_doh: = :shakeno:

Thats pretty nifty info you have there I am going to investigate this weekend. just 2 questions

Is the gear ratio/box the same for 125/175mx

If the seals are gone is it detrimental to the engine ?

Is the gear ratio/box the same for 125/175mx - I am not sure but an expert should appear soon

If the seals are gone is it detrimental to the engine ? - Yes. Re-read Blackhats post

If you are going to split the engine it is pointless not changing the seals unless you know they are OK. Just a waste of gaskets, oil and time.
