Doa Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 hi liam with your frame number on the headstock. there is 2 ways you can get it without totally destroying a great paintjob. 1. not the easiest to source. you can get it magnetographed. its like ultrasound for a pregnant mom. similar to xray but cheaper and easier to get done. finding someone to do it in your area would be the hard part. cost may be too much. 2. second can be done at home. first find a pic of a genuine frame number so you know exactly where they placed them. then using double sided adheasive foam tape mask outside the area you wish to expose. then with a handyman spot sand blaster carefully blast the paint away. there is no need to remove all the paint as the munbers will show up once the colour of the paints dont match. then with a sharp scribe clean out the numbers and apply a coating of protective paint to the numbers. if you take care masking you can make this look like its meant to be this way. with your frame colour i would go for something like a metalic aluminium finnish. ive learned this the hard way as most early harleys my other love have very shallow numbers marked and are all too easy to paint out. 3. for anyone getting a frame repainted or powder coated. advise the paintshop that the numbers must remain visible as often they will remove the old paint but not clean out the frame numbers thus erasing them in the coating process.
LiamDTR Posted January 13, 2011 Author Posted January 13, 2011 I use the standard michelin T63 and they seem to fair pretty well in the snow and generally all round conditions. Other than full blown off-road tires though, I haven't tried anything else on the DTR so its a biased opinion. Be careful with the after market headlight units as some will not pass an MOT. Cheers Vez!! Will invest in some of those then, I have a set of motocross tyres but completely non-legal lol. And the headlight... I noticed you commented on another reply that I made regarding Filed the eBay dealer. I see that he deals with a lot of the motard end of the stuff so would you recommend the headlight from him? Looks good enough from what I can see and it's much more attractive than the twin lamp option that I had http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200562814096&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_853wt_1139. Also DOA cheers for the advice!! I will look into that depending on cost of course

I will look into that depending on cost of course Personally i would get a headlight from somewhere that sells E-marked ones. Its my guess that the one you linked to isn't suitable for UK roads and i believe they have less restrictive rules in Portugal, judging by some of the DTR mods they have over there that is, but i could be wrong and it may well pass. What you could do, if you really like that one, is get a standard DTR headlight or cheap E-marked one for the MOT and change it over when its passed

Really do prefer it to the others I have been looking at and as much as I'd like to restore this bike to the factory standard I can see myself throwing a fair bit into it I think my other half is going to start getting jealous with all this cash I intend to funnel into the bike

Vez Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Most parts are usable on DTR's from 1989-2001, although may need the connectors changing to suit. Keep an eye on ebay, clocks and switch gear are quite common. Parts are still available new from a Yamaha dealer (http://www.yamahasco...sp?modelID=9131 ) prepare to be shocked though. Clocks http://www.yamahasco...=9131&pageID=38 Left hand switch gear http://www.yamahasco...=9131&pageID=41 There is also the option of after market digital clocks, can't remember the make atm. Edit, these clocks are not suitable for your bike, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/yamaha-dt125x-dt125r-clock-set-7587-miles-only-dt125-/120670213456?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item1c18815550 they may work with some effort, but they have very different connections. These are the style of clocks you are looking for:

Those are not my clocks. I have one of these as a rodent deterrent, thanks for the offer though. And £80 delivered sounds very iffy to me.

Similar to my Compound x-bow lol, nice sight though £80 sounds iffy to me as well BUT! Ace up the sleeve as it has a Number plate on it etc. and the other halfs dad is a director at an insurance brokers so free hpi check if it's too good to be true he'll let me know. Regardless.. I'm going for that set of clocks it's what I need and I'm getting annoyed not being on the road right now so trying to speed things up a little
2 Wheels Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 I like them colours,,,,,,,it suits the bike nice find Liam
LiamDTR Posted January 16, 2011 Author Posted January 16, 2011 thanks 2 wheels. Bad times, got outbid on the clocks, they ended up going for £43 before postage and I had my max bid at £42
Moderator Airhead Posted January 16, 2011 Moderator Posted January 16, 2011 yes but for all you know the winner could have bid a lot more than £43, ebay bids in increments and at that figure it bids in £1.00 increments, hence you were beaten by £1. I know these things' i've spent millions on ebay What mileage was on the clocks you bid for, was it both clocks and the mounting bracket? BTW my DTR speedo cost me £45 plus post just for the speedo. It was cheap at that though for a NOS one However...i do happen to have a full clockset with only 9000 miles (miles is MUCH better than Km's in UK)many of the ebay ones are Km's and the seller dont always say so, you have to look at the photo or ask. I paid last year £41.17 for this, you can have it for that plus postage if you want it or it will be ebayed. I bought this because my bike had a Km clock on it but never used it because the NOS one turned up and as my bike had done no miles I fitted that one
LiamDTR Posted January 16, 2011 Author Posted January 16, 2011 I may have to take you up on that kind offer Oldgit, I'm calling up a mate tomorrow who runs a salvage / breaking company for bike (gloucester bike specialist) as he thinks they may have some bits kicking around. If not I'll PM you asap! Thanks though that is very kind of you
Moderator Airhead Posted January 16, 2011 Moderator Posted January 16, 2011 he's a handy mate to have, and the father in law runs an insurance company, some people have all the luck
LiamDTR Posted January 16, 2011 Author Posted January 16, 2011 Lol due to my 6 points I don't get my insurance through him
Moderator Airhead Posted January 16, 2011 Moderator Posted January 16, 2011 Liam post a link to the ebay clocks you bid on, i would like to see them Edit I saw them. Mine are different for a later model, The clocks look very slightly different amd they just have one 9 pin plug on them. Be aware of this...what does your loom have? dont buy later ones from your mate if they wont fit. as a clue the temperature gauge has a white/red band on mine. That early one has a green/red band Anyway I think we have just about wore out this hello post now so start something in another more appropriate place if you will
LiamDTR Posted January 16, 2011 Author Posted January 16, 2011 Okay mate here you go http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320641758825&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_1156
