wild foamy Posted February 17, 2009 Author Share Posted February 17, 2009 picked up the new battery today and fitted it, also drained the tank and added fresh petrol with 25:1 oil mix, cleaned the carb out and put some redex in the carb bowl aswell, and after much more running up and down the street and kicking it furious it DID fire up in the biggest cloud of white smoke you've ever seen. after it had warmed up and p*ssed off the neighbours the smoke died down but its running lean, when you first start it the revs go up to about 4/5k and after about 10 seconds they work their way down to 3K, then if you turn the choke off i can get it to idle around 1.5/2k, but the revs are all over the place and it only seems to be firing on the left-hand cylinder as the right-hand one does not smoke from the exhaust, and only when you rev it up does it smoke from both exhausts. however, when you put the choke on it revs up to about 4k also, when revving it up if you open it to WOT straight away it will die down and cut out, if you gradually work your way to full throttle it will rev up and then hold the high revs even with the throttle closed right back. found the problem though, the little rubber bush that goes over the carb manifold and bolts into the reed block seems to have perished and is a bit of a loose fit, will see if i can find a similar/same replacement on the 'net Now, second problem: it doesnt charge the battery when its running, after a few minutes the voltage drops to 7v and if you put the lights on, sound the horn or do anything else involving electricity it dies Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

wild foamy Posted February 18, 2009 Author Share Posted February 18, 2009 Its a "Jawa 350 Style" and from what i can see there arent any breaks in the wiring and the alternator looks okay. its a right PITA to start and usually involves running up and down the road with it for 10 minutes, if/when i can be bothered to go through the whole routine again i will test the alternator to see if there is anything coming out of it, if their isnt then that's my problem... ... btw, how do i test the alternator? its all a learning curve i suppose... haven't joined the Jawa owners club yet, was kinda hopeing they would have a forum but its not listed on their website haven't found a manual yet Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You bike 'Jawa 350 Style' is known as a model 640 It has electronic ignition which is usually quite reliable The charging issue maybe something as simple as a bad contact of the carbon brushes in the alternator, especially since its been stood a while This year is the 80th anniversary of the Jawa motor company The owners club will again be having a stand at Stafford show this year To join the owners club is £19 for year 1 and £14 for renewals (at current date) When you join you will be able to get a copy of manuals in English for your bike from the owners club Spare parts are / may be available from Mick Berril (Northampton)...
