1986 FZ600

Hello everybody, this is my first post. I have been riding bikes for a while. Started with the MSF course, bought a Ninja 250R, graduated to a 1988 HD Sportster all tricked out and ended up with a 2001 Honda Valkyrie that I am currently riding. It has 32K on it.

I am picking up a 1986 FZ600 in the next few days locally. It has been repainted silver and hasn't been ridden or started up in 2 years. When the owner tried to start it, the carbs puked fuel. He took them off and cleaned them but they still puked. My guess is the floats are gummed and stuck. It also needs a rear tire and a basic freshening up. It has 13K on it and hasn't been registered or really driven for 5 years. Its actually a pretty ugly bike currently but I look foward to ripping it apart and rebuilding it. I want to paint it lime green which is my favorite color.

Anyway... I am picking it up for $300.00 with a new battery so I think its a pretty good deal although there is no way to start it up or test the motor or clutch because it is 9 degrees here with snow.

I did some research on the bike and it seems that parts are reasonable on Ebay.

I don't think I will need many parts for the carbs. Most guys say that they can be cleaned up with good success.

A new rear tire is gonna run me $80.00

I figure that I will probably have to put $300.00 into it total to get it up and running (I hope)

This will give me an approx $600.00 total investment. The reviews I have read on this old bike are for the most part good. I read that it is Yamaha's first entry into the "race replica" bikes like Kawasaki, Suzuki and Honda were coming out with. I also read that the motor is the same one that was in the XJ600 which again... is regarded as a really good bike for its time.

Just thought I would tell a little story for my first post. I look forward to joining the Yamaha group of riders and collectors.

Hello jgcable & welcome. From experience i can tell you that these engines can fit into a xj550 frame as well (i had one). Personally i like these engines coz they're so easy to work on & can take a fair amount of abuse ( i once crashed & put a whole in the head of one & it still ran, ok it only did 200yards to the litre of oil but it still ran,lol).
