Hi Everyone,

Just wondered if anyone could help as I'm

no expert.I have a dt125r which I have out

of the bike.It runs sweet until I select a gear,

everytime I select a gear it dies.

I have kicked it, left in gear and everything

moves freely but will not run.Put into neutral

up she fires and sweet as a nut.

I'm no mechanic so would appreciate any feedback.

What do you mean you "have out of the bike" ??

The usual cause of this problem is the side stand switch, As a safety feature bike manufacturers started fitting a switch so that if the bike was put in gear when the stand wasn't retracted the engine would cut out. This was to stop muppets like me doing a pole vault round the first left hander I came to. :blink:

Hi.

What it is I bought this ages ago,to put into a fieldbike

but as with most things just stood in shed,without

unwrapping(time been in short supply,).So decided to try

running before going any further.

Is the switch like a plunger effect.What you've said makes

a lot of sense "Your a star" I've been pulling my hair out

trying to work it out.(wouldn't mind but I hadn't got much in

the first place).

I'll have a look tomorrow and let you know.

Firstly a big thankyou to "oldgitonabike" your a star,

switch was faulty so cut and joined wires and superb

it went through the gears without even a blip :D

Can't tell you how chuffed I WAS. Gone back to it

to show my lad and now I think I'm jinxed ,just

won't start.Getting fuel ok ,but no spark,checked

wires and they seem ok.Took coil and plug to his

quad to try and sparks ok.Just don't have a clue

(please remember I'm not a mechanic,so any advise

in simplest term as possible please).

Its got me so frustrated spent so many nights trying

to find cure for other problem.So chuffed when sorted

and now this.

Please any help really appreciated. :(

You say you went through the gears ok, so is this engine in a bike now and you rode it? Cant quite picture the scene with what youve said so far!

BTW there isnt a kill switch that youve operated unknowingly?

No I've mounted on a very large block of wood (not very sightly but does the job)

Just had the Mrs holding the engine at slight revs as I shifted up the box (didn't

miss beat).

Theres no kill switch ,as when I bought it come with a sawn ignition so just requires

a screwdriver to turn on .

I turn on and you hear as normal the faint "buzz" is that the power valve? but like

I say no spark.

Really sorry for being a pain (wish I was a skilled mechanic).

Ah i see, make sure its strapped down properly, i suggest some ratchet straps.

so youve got an ignition switch connected up, on the bike it would have had a kill switch too, have you got that also or are there a couple of wires shorted together. I would need to see a proper wiring diagram to comment in any detail and havent got one.

Just make sure that there arent any wires disconnected, dont know what the buzzing sound is as i am not experienced with power valves

How are you supplying fuel to the carb BTW?

Sorry missed the last part. I have a very large syringe connected

to upright metal above engine as only running for short bursts.

Yes no kill switch,so as you say it will be 2 wires shorted together.

After looking everything looks to be as was and connected.

Its such a pain.

When testing for spark at the plug how have you been doing this?

Have you got a battery connected as well?

I would hope not because they arent cheap. When testing for spark at the plug how have you been doing this?

I've made sure powers on (sound of power valve ???).Then with

plug in cap hold the plug thread against an uncorroded shiny

head bolt and kickstart operated swiftly.(This is the method I've

used in past when first tested this engine and generated good spark)

Thats correct but you must make sure that the plug is well grounded because ive heard that kicking it with the plug not well grounde can damage CDI, If youve got a car jump lead you could use this to grip the plug threads and clamp the other end to engine

Sorry only just getting back,sky has just opened up as usual &

had to clear away (pouring down.)"The beauty of only having room

to work outside"

Will try this tomorrow.So do you think the CDI may be damaged

with me having good results before when just holding firmly?

To go fetch you son to show him...Why wont it start now, doesnt make much sense, i found a drawing on internet but its foreign and dont understand the terminology it uses, will look further....Its a dt125r...Yes? Do you know year?

Hi "Sunny Shropshire" believe me when it comes to luck,I'm in short supply,

it stopped when the fuel ran out .Sorry I don't know the year.Believe me I'm really

baffled too.

OH NO ! please don't be mad at me (I did say I'm not mechanically minded)

The plug when I last had it running was a 3 prong .Which I put in just before

trying as newish plug.(Got a few plugs).Also doesnt look like it was fuel that

stopped it as still some in pipe,worse news than that on examination of plug

the one prong is against the electrode.

Does this mean the consequences could be due to this and also costly (would

this have damaged the CDI ?)

Dont know if any damage would be done by that, put an normal plug in and test for spark

Will do tomorrow,time to get cleaned up now.

Just wondered if this could have been anything

to do with it and would it have damaged CDI.

Will be in touch ,but please let me know any

of your thoughts as I really appreciate your

help.
