NEVER weld a tank..... BOOM

It can be brazed, but it needs to be washed out with BOILING water first... the steam gets rid of the vapours.

A radiator specialist can do it for you ;)

Other than that a it's tank from the breakers.

If you had an FZR1000 I could help you out, since I got two in the attic  (see for sale section)

If you have removed the tank, it can be welded. You will need to vent it first. if the hole was caused by rust, then a cover plate will need to be welded on. However, if that is the case it would be better to get another tank.

I've used a fuel tank liner that I bought on eBay recently, and it worked a treat!

Here's the link

Same seller I got it from - tonnes of info and no messing about with mixing, just pour it in, swill it about, drain it and then let it dry!

Worth every penny!

Have used a petrol tank repair putty successfully on a car which would get you out of the poo - but better to look for a new tank or have the old one brazed.

Best stuff to use is JB Weld. Its petrol proof, waterproof, heat proof up to 500 degrees F - in fact its everything proof - fookin FANTASTIC stuff.

Read about it here:

We've used it for years on our bikes, cars and otehr stuff - brilliant bit of kit.

And according to Rod my friendly powdercoater you can fill small pits in casings and other things with JB weld and powdercoat em after safely about the only thing they can find to do it. but it is a bugger too sand etc when hard

It is indeed - you need to grind it really - but its proper decent stuff.

Had a small leak on my XTZ750

Used Plastic Paddings " Leak Fix" good for petrol and sets in 10 mins

Took the tank off and stood it in the sun, leak pointed at the sun.

Went to Halfords and bought the product £4.79, plus a pencil with a fibreglass tip, used to abrade the surface around the leak to remove paint and make sure you get back to shiny metal, and that the area is DRY and free from petrol.

Mixed up Leak Fix and applied 10mins later the job's a gud un

My fz tank had quite a few holes, i emptied it out left it a few days then set about welding it, the only prob i had was due to it been that thin i ended up chasing the weld, i think i got halfway across the tank before i filled the holes lol

il have to try that as the petro patch didnt work :( iv ordered some JB weld Cheers Goff il go buy some leak fix tomoz and be ready if it starts again lol determined not to buy a new tank

By the time youve spent all that time and money on patching stuff, and found it still leaks, You would have been better buying a used tank off ebay as I said earlier. You should not worry too much about it, just ask the seller if it doesnt leak, save the answer from the seller, ebay will look after your interests if it does. IMHO

Listen to the old gits ;)

Either take it to someone for BRAZING or replace it! I did say this in my first post ;)

I have delt with leaking tanks before and ALWAYS brazed them. As Phil found out... it's too thin to weld and weld goes hard and brittle and no doubt it will crack again. THE ONLY WAY to repair a tank PROPERLY is to braze it, as the brazed joint remains flexible and will not crack.

The easiest thing would be to buy another tank... you can still sell yours and it would save a lot of hassle :D
