Mikey*DTR Posted August 18, 2008 Share Posted August 18, 2008 as if petrol wasnt expensive enough my bike has decided to shed a leak i opened the shed door ready to go to work this morning and thought Phhh sticking of petrol but then i remembered i had it running in the shed before i shut the door but didnt think anything of it got on started riding then had to flick over to reserves thought huh i filled up last night surely not stopped at work with a wet sock and leg iv got a tiny tiny hole in the bottom corner on the side the bike leans at petrol leaking out got home stripped the tank off bike cleaned it degreased.... whats my options? new tank? welded? do they sell repair stuff? BOOM It can be brazed, but it needs to be washed out with BOILING water first... the steam gets rid of the vapours. A radiator specialist can do it for you Other than that a it's tank from the breakers. yoda Posted August 18, 2008 Share Posted August 18, 2008 If you have removed the tank, it can be welded. You will need to vent it first. if the hole was caused by rust, then a cover plate will need to be welded on. However, if that is the case it would be better to get another tank. Here's the link Same seller I got it from - tonnes of info and no messing about with mixing, just pour it in, swill it about, drain it and then let it dry! Worth every penny! Mikey*DTR Posted August 20, 2008 Author Share Posted August 20, 2008 thanks again for ur suggestions i bought some PETRO PATCH cleand my tank etc done a 1st coat let it get tacky for 20mins then cut out a small patch coated in it left it on it for few hours then another coat got up this morning stuck the tank on my bike pored petrol in and away i went no leaks i did another coat tonight happy chappy only cost £4.75 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Its petrol proof, waterproof, heat proof up to 500 degrees F - in fact its everything proof - fookin FANTASTIC stuff. cockspur Posted August 21, 2008 Share Posted August 21, 2008 Had a small leak on my XTZ750 Used Plastic Paddings " Leak Fix" good for petrol and sets in 10 mins Took the tank off and stood it in the sun, leak pointed at the sun. Went to Halfords and bought the product £4.79, plus a pencil with a fibreglass tip, used to abrade the surface around the leak to remove paint and make sure you get back to shiny metal, and that the area is DRY and free from petrol. You should not worry too much about it, just ask the seller if it doesnt leak, save the answer from the seller, ebay will look after your interests if it does. I did say this in my first post I have delt with leaking tanks before and ALWAYS brazed them. As Phil found out... it's too thin to weld and weld goes hard and brittle and no doubt it will crack again. THE ONLY WAY to repair a tank PROPERLY is to braze it, as the brazed joint remains flexible and will not crack.
