I have a 1981 xs 400 and recently lost my keys to it. While replacing the ignition was easy the question is now how do I get the locking gas tank cap off. Is this possible or is getting the gas cap re-keyed a possibility????

thanks

you can undo the cap with a bent screwdriver just push it under the lock end, in england yuo can still get keys from a yamaha dealer just from the number or a decent key specialist

Can you give me a little more detail on the bent screwdriver?? i buy a lot of tanks that have locks & usually end up taking out the pins which is a PIA, Id like to learn how you did that. thanks jeep.

I presume you mean the cap like this

in which case if you have one you can open look underneath it ands see the position of the catch, you can then take a bent screwdriver and push it under the locked one
