  1. Hi Shes a beauty. I have got a chance of getting a virago 250, whats it like? I've read in motorcycle news that long motorway trips should be avoided. Is this the case. I dont want a fast bike but I would like something that will hold 70mph with out a struggle.

    Cheers jimbosimbo

  2. not fare. how dya get 85mph (or mpg)I've only managed 67 tops unladen down hill on my YBR. Did go on a 212 mile roung trip to the Isle of Bute camping for two nightsand it cost me £8 on petrol!!!!!! Great pics!. Don't matter wot you ride, its all about riding.

Just as Drepwy has said, just do it mate, you will have the best holiday ever, go where you please, when you please. I did the WHOLE of Scotland from down here in Lancashire on a YBR125, best holiday I ever had, memories and piccys taken, fantastic, I did 2500 miles (Small change to the 300,000 miles Ive done in the last 3 years on bikes) In the 10 days I had allocated to my trip. Just make sure your bike is ready for it. A tent and other camp stuff, and away you go!!!!

My ybr..a little laden, but still did 85Mph

    I loved these 'roads'

The people you will meet on your journey will think your mad, but its those people that will help to make your trip a fun thing to do. Every morning of my trip, I just loaded up and rode away, if I saw a road I liked, Id try it out and see where it went. It was my Birthday while I was up there and this guy off a campsite played happy birthday on his bagpipes to me while his wife sang.

Go for it mate, be great, youll be on here when you get back telling us of your stories.

  3. Loosened off free play a bit and noticed the brake peddle dose not spring back when its applied. When i lift it up the wheel turns freely and the brake camshaft lever sticks when I apply the brake as well. I dont remember if this is supposed to move. These wee bikes are supposed to be reliable!!

    few pointers...

check the tyre is not rubbing on the swing arrm

    is the hub hot?

My mates 125 did this and the previous owner "forgot" to replace a spacer hence the bearing totally collapsed.

    chain oiled?

    brake free play correct?

  4. Go for it. I'm planning to go round Scotland next summer on my YBR 125 with a tent. Its a slow bike and drivers hate me but what the hey!! I keep getting images of the road up toward Ullapool and into the mountains in Wester Ross. No cars No cares. I failed my test September and dont have the cash for more lessons and test and all the work my bike suddenly needs but I can still ride and I'm gonna. Best of luck with your trip cos you realy should do it. Go for it!!

    hi everyone.

ive been toying with a little thought for a while now, its quite a crazy idea but i'd like to see how it goes nonetheless...

i'd like to go touring on my little Yammy DT50, which is a completely stupid idea but why not give it a try? its got a nice comfy seat, tough as nails and is cheap to run.

anyway, was thinking Rep. Ireland as i've always wanted to go there and see the local heritage and landscape and ferries leave regularly from liverpool (that would be the longest haul, from Newbury to Liverpool) and then travel from Dublin, down along the eastern coast to Killarney, then cut back through ireland traveling inland toward Dublin

i was thinking of spending about two weeks there, obviously i would take a little top box, possibly some panniers if i can get some to fit and a backpack with a few supplies but would rely on various local hotels and B&Bs' to keep me warm and dry, possibly even take a tent or something and really "rough it" ;)

at this point, please pick yourself up off the floor, stop laughing and let me know, would you think it even possible?

it's still just a mildly pungent brainfart, but i'd quite like to try it... ^_^

let me know what you think

    - Steve

  5. Hi all.

I'm havin problems with my YBR 125. The back wheel is very stif. I dont know if the break pad are locked (drum) I can move the wheel with effort. I noticed it while out riding today. When I stopped I tryed to push it and I thought the break was on. I managed to ride home with it with no burning smells but with a slight loss of performance (if I can use this word while talking about a YBR). I checked the chain and sprockets. The front sprocket was heavily clogged with gunk I cleaned this out but the whel is still stiff. Any ideas?

    Cheers

  6. dont panic chains are not expensive

oh I know but i'm a tight arse and skint, not a good combination. I can get a chain sprocket set for £25 £ 40 labour. I wish I could do this job but I dont have the knowhow at the mo.

    howz the moto guzzi going?

  7. Thanks very much. I have not attempted this yet.Its been done by professional machanics so I hope the rear spindle has been tightened and the oil has been changed last month. I have a feeling its going to be a new Chain and sprocket. such is life

I had a go and adjusted the slack on my chain. Done everything by the manual went out and the bike ran good. But my wife went out for a ride and said that she stalled it and noticed a slight change in performance and sound. I checked the chain and it was a bit slacker. I mentioned earlier that I was running out of alighnment mark but its actualy on the middle mark. AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!

  8. If it keeps going slack (the chain) & you're running out of alingment marks then the chain needs replacing. The torque arm is to make sure you have a back brake (if this is not attached you have no rear brake), the nut can be loosened (after removing the pin) when adjusting the chain but remember to tighten afterwards & replace the pin coz it (the pin) stops the nut going west while you're going east. It's also a MOT failure if the pin is missing (point of roadworthyness if pulled over by the law) because it's there to stop the nut coming off if it should become loose. By the way you are tightening the rear spindle after adjustment i hope, coz that's the other way the chain keeps loosening? The false neutrals can be caused by the oil being no good, needing changing.

  9. test booked online tonight for the 18th august, there cant be many test spots available before the change as this date shown was the earliest available slot. i hope i pass or im fooked.

on a lighter note ive hacksawed the silencer from the exhaust pipe to remove unwanted innards. ill weld silencer back on and test over the weekend

    Hi

How did you get on with your test? Mines booked sept 9th. I'm from Bowling between Clydebank and Dumbarton and my test will be in Dumbarton. I'm crappin masel. I cant get the u turn pegged. I could tell someone how to do one but......

I totaly love my wee YBR. I know its small and slow but I put 2000 miles on it, went to Bute, Aberfeldy home vis oban, Berwick and my first trip was to Largs. 60 mph does me fine and if I get stuck behind an auld biddy or a caravan then I can look at the view.

  10. hi there

Try pushing the key in as you wiggle the handlebars mine pops into place if I push and bounce it of the full lock. Hope that makes sense. I've just got to remember to do this before I activate my alarmed disc lock or I get it in the ears.

  11. Hi Guys me again

I'm Havin chain problems with my YBR. It keeps going slack. I posted reciently about false neutrals can these be caused by slack chains? I was out tonight practicing hill starts, stalled a couple of times (real good ones) then started getting false neutrals. The bike started sounding gruffer. I checked the chain its slacker than before I left, Its almost like the stalls slackened the chain!

Anyway I'm going to have a go at adjusting it, I have the manual (and no machanical experiance) but there is a nut that is baffeling me. Its the brake torque rod nut which has a pin through it. What's that all about and what do I do with it? :headscratch: I think Im running out off alinement marks what is the next step remove a link and reset or get a new chain. Arrrgh so many question.

  12. Cheers Guys

I am wearing bike boots but they have a rubber section for preventing wear on the boots when changing gear. It's possible the rubber gets slippery in the rain. The problem is not remembering wot I done to cause the false neutral in the first place. The oil has been changed during a service they put silcoline in it, thelast oil used was Shell helix plus 10w40 the man said silcoline is THE BEST.

I suspect this is one of the thing you have to put up with on 2 wheels.

On the subject of catching up with other bikes my YBR has a problem keepin up with its own exhaust emissions

  13. Hi There

I wonder if anyone can throw some light on to why false neutrals happen. I an still a learner and have had a lot of these recently. I had the bike (YBR 125) serviced and last week had the chain tightened. I had a bad one tonight, nerely went over the handle bars, wobbled all over the shop AND sounded my horn just to draw attention to myself. I have learned not to panick when this happens but I feel they are too frequent. It only happens when go from first to second it could be that I'm to light with the shift.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

  14. Hi does anyone out there know where I can get a windscreen for a 2005 YBR 125? I know there is one made by yamaha but is there any from other manufacturers out there?

    Cheers

  15. I know it's a bit late to respond to this question, but just thought I'd add my comments in case anyone else stumbles over this topic...

I've had my YBR for little over a year now and I'm very happy with it as a first bike. It's the 2006 model; so no fuel injection, but the manual choke has never caused me a problem. Fire it up in and by the time you've got your gloves and stuff sorted - it should be good to go. It did use to stall quite a bit in the early days, but a very slight adjustment of the idle speed was all that was needed and it's been no bother since.

One thing I would reccommend to anyone with one of these bikes is getting rid of the stock tyres as soon as you can. I don't know what they're like on the 2007 model, but the ones I had were useless. If you live in the UK and have to deal with the wet weather, you end up sliding around quite a bit. I had Michelin "Pilot Sporty" (not to be confused with the "Pilot Sport") put on mine and I can't speak highly enough of them. For anyone who's got a YBR and is still on stock tyres, you should consider changing them when you can - the difference is amazing and instantly noticable. You can find the tyres on ebay if you have the know-how to change them yourself (I didn't so the mechanic at the garage ordered them in for me and did it as part of the 2nd service).

Appart from some other cosmetic stuff like the Oxford heated grips and a windscreen; the bike is pretty much as-is and has never let me down. I'm so glad I didn't go for the Honda CG, plus... the alloys on the Yamaha are far easier to clean than all those spokes! Other reasons I chose the YBR over the CG... As has been already said; Better looking bike, kickstart and the insurance and RAC deal was on at the time so that was a huge influecne too (probably why that year 50% more new YBRs were registered than CGs)

    Enjoy :o)
