  1. It doesn't have side panels and when the tank's off, the rear shock is in the way

Having just found out the battery is a sealed item then you may have to tilt it somehow to remove it. Possibly towards the front of the bike. Also make sure the battery connections are pushed out of the way as they can take up space when trying to twist or turn the battery out of the frame.

  2. Hi there,

I recently got a 1987 (i think) YB100 for free. And apart from some minor wear and some missing parts, it was pretty much all there.

I am however missing some parts that are essential.

Does anyone know if the following parts from a FS1E would be ok in the YB100? I can get parts for the FS1E a lot easier, and I am finding difficulties in getting the required ones for the yb100.

    • The fuel tap. I can get a fs1e 12mm tap.
    • The brake rod. Are they pretty generic just dependant on length and diameter?
    • Springs for the centre stand, brake pedal and back brake switch?

As you may realise, this is my first bike and im tackling everthing on it myself. All this before i've even taken my CBT.

Thank you for any help or advice given, much apprectiated.

the best way of finding out is to put them on the bike & see if they work. As long as they get the bike through it's MOT it should be ok. Welcome to the world of basic custom jobs.

  3. Hey guys,

I just bought an 86 fz600. I only paid 700 bucks for it. It's piped, jetted, and all k & n intakes. It's in decent shape, you know needs basic cleaning and stuff. One problem, after it starts, it takes a little bit to really get to running good, but doesn't quite get there before shooting oil out of the crankcase breather..it will keep running but I could use some help in where I should start fixing it or at least finding out what it may be. The old owner thought it might be gas shooting out...but when I looked, the oil breather was wet with oil and dripping when I shut the bike off. All the carb intakes were dry. It has k & n air intakes thus the reason for a short crankcase breather. I could really use some help!! Thanks guys!!

I've got the same bike & if it's got K&N's then check the main jets have been replaced with larger jets. If not the problem could just be caused by the engine over heating. Alternatively check the oil cooler's working properly. sometimes the valve behind the oil filter gets broken when over zealous replacement of the filter means the bolt is tightened too much.

  4. Hi,

First thread here, and like many others, I've registered to tap into the world of experts out there.

My problem is the standard battery in my 97 TDM850 wont take any change anymore from a trickle charger. I guess it's shot and needs replacing, however the battery box looks to be situated in front of the rear shock and may need a gynecologist to get it out, any ideas folks?

    Cheers, Steve

I would suggest it can only come out 1 of 2 ways. If out the side look for a panel to unscrew under one of the side panels, if out through the top you may have to lift the tank.

  5. help please

i need to remove my swingarm bearings does any 1 no how to do this

If you have a manual for any bike you can read up on doing this job as they're changed much the same way on most bikes, if in doubt buy/borrow or down load a manual for specifics on that bike.

  6. Hi.

I have recently bought a YZ250 2000. The bike was running before it was put into a garage for 3 months, but no longer sparks! There is a very low voltage coming to the cdi unit (approx 0.6v sometimes.... i think) from the magneto, but nothing coming to the plug. I have put another 2nd hand coil and cdi unit but still no joy.

I am about to kick it and cry

Can anyone offer any advice? I have had the flywheel cover off and cleaned it up but now have run out of things to try......

    HELP!

    Thanks, Paul

Check the battery condition (charge & check the plates ain't warped) then the connector at the regulator/rectifier. Sometimes when you rest a bike for a few months you get a build up of verdigree (green powdery crap) in the electrical connections, this can cause the drop in voltage.

  7. i have a 1983 xj550 and my engine is fubar. i want to put another engine in the bike as it's a very good frame etc. my question is, am i restricted to the same engine or will anything else fit straight in? ie something a little bigger.

obviously still yamaha xj to use the same mountings etc. also does anyone have an engine ofr sale that will fit in or a 550 engine ofr sale?

    thanks peeps

    Needles

    Hi Needles.

I had the same problem with my xj550 & found out that any engine of the same configuration will fit the frame. I put a 1983 xj600 engine in my frame & after a little messing around with the igniter units managed to get a top speed of 125mph (fork seals were knackered so this speed was where me undies started to change colour). I have a 1986 fz600 at the moment & it has the same configuration engine & i know that if you look around you'll find a few still in some breakers.By the way don't get fooled into buying a later engine (1990's or later) as these engines have a tilted head & barrels & won't fit.

  8. hi there, can anyone help me. ive got a 1988 fz600 what had a siezed engine, i was told buy a shop that a xj600 engine fitted so i bought a 1992 xj motor. to my dismay i found out it only had a single pick up after i fitted it. does anyone know how i can get round this, i was told that it could be wired up but when ive looked is a plug which is on the fz600 motor which went to the igniter but theres not one on the xj motor. could it be wired up tomy old harness or would i have to change to a xj harness, hope someone can help me

Hi there, having owned both bikes in the past i can say that as long as the engine configuration (the tilt of the head & barrels) is the same you only have to change over the ignition pick-up coils along with the back plates to overcome this problem.
