  1. niiick.

No wonder Richard Brunstrom has it in for moyorcyclists in Wales!!! Idiots like YOU make him right in all his campaigns against us.

But then again as a person who has a 'Diploma in motor VEHICLE mechanics' and not in MOTORCYCLE mechanics, you wouldn't know about the problem the dt125's have with the caliper carriers.

  2. I'm a new member to this club & to biking!

I last had a motorbike back in the 70's (Suzuki GT250) not an RD 250 Yam!

I'm now in me 50's and the wife says I'm having a midlife crisis, but I've brought me-self a XJ900 Diversion S, on an 'M' plate.

The fuel gauge does not work!

I did notice on ebay when I was looking to buy, this was quite a common fault!

Does anybody know what the problem is, so I can go straight to it, without dismantling the whole bike!

    Many thanks

    John

welcome to the forum mate. check the wire from the sender unit is connected under the tank otherwise it's the sender unit has siezed inside the tank & needs to be replaced.

  3. I know just how you feel, i bought a Jawa 350 off ebay in february...

pics werent very good, had no idea what the bike looked like, if it turned over, if it was complete, description was very short, won the auction for about £150.

went up to swindon a few weeks later with my dad to pick it up in the van, met the bloke in sainsburys car park and he wheeled it out of his van, flat tyres, paint peeling off, flat battery, carb hanging off, covered in dust, rust and sh*t. put it into our van, paid and went back home to newbury.

first week or so was trying to get it running, having only been riding 3 months and having literally F/A experiance with engineering and motors i didnt know what i was doing, a seal was missing in the carb which meant the bike would not run

i still got that Jawa, it now starts first kick every time and runs very well, i have since sealed the carb up and needs only the exhausts sealing up, new rear tyre and new alternator brushes to get it tip-top again.

always keep positive, first stage is getting it running so sort that out first and then you can start thinking about what to do with it in terms of tidying it up. usually once you hear it fire up for the first time it gives you a reason to keep working on it.

clean up what is rusty and re-use what you can, if it is something simple like a gasket then make it, don't start buying new parts unless it is really essential to the running of the bike.

its all a learning curve, just for some it is steeper than others ;)

Well done steve, i teach motorcycle mechanics at a couple of youth projects in & around London & what you have done so far is quite impressive mate. Good for you!

When it comes to buying off fleabay you need to know when (at any winning bid) to say 'Bollox mate!' & not pay. This comes under their ruling of 'not fit for purpose' . which means you can report the seller to e-bay's customer service bits & pieces (not that they do anything about it but it gets you out of buying a heap of sh1t). When it comes to buying, if it don't start or there ain't a log book (V5), either knock the price down or tell them F@@K off, coz they wouldn't sell it otherwise.

  4. We also have 'saddle soap' here as well. also a similar product is dubbing, if the leather item u'r talking about is hardened/shrunk, then smother it & leave it a few days (for the soap/dubbing) to soak into the leather, then smother it again & leave until it don't want feeding anymore. then whats left on the surface should buff into the leather nicely & it should be nice & maliable to fit to whoever wears it. Hope this helps (I've done this in the past & still my leathers, after years of abuse, still fit nicely, despite being a over weight type person.Lol).

  5. According to vosa.

    for motorcycles...

Lights - condition, operation, security, and correct colour of headlamp(s), rear lights, indicators and reflectors. Also the headlamp(s) will be checked to see if the aim is correct

Steering and suspension - condition, security and operation including: forks, mountings, controls, bearings, etc

Horn - correct operation and the right type

Exhaust system - complete, secure, correct type and not too noisy

Side car - includes checks on: attachment, suspension, wheel bearings, wheel alignment, lights and tyres

Wheel alignment - correct alignment of front and rear wheels

Frame - free from cracks, damage, distortion or corrosion which is likely to affect steering or brakes

Wheels and tyres - wheel condition and security, tyre condition, size and type, and tread depth

Brakes - condition, operation and performance (efficiency test),and brake controls

General items - condition and security of final drive, footrests and seat

I found this on the Directgov website under MOT if you're wondering.

  6. check the fuel feed pipes, if there's so much as a pinprick of a hole then you won't see the leak until it's running (or in the case of fuel pumps, until the pipes under pressure). also check the ends of the pipes for tightness & cracking (due to the rubber hardening). the usual places for mysterious fuel leaks in my experience (usually found after carb strip downs, lol).

  7. muslim scumbags insulting the very people that PROTECT the FREEDOM that allows these arsewipes to do what they're allowed to do in THIS country.

IF they don't like it send them back to their country of origin to do the same!!! Oh yea that's right, they wouldn't be allowed to demonstrate in their own country & would be shot for doing so. F@@KING HYPOCRITES!!!!

  8. hi everyone.

just a quick question, is it possible to fabricate a set of alternator brushes or do you have to buy originals from a dealer?

    ta

    Steve

You can bastardise something to fit, but for your pockets sakes (at the best of times) keep with the original replacements. From experience it works out cheaper mate.

Apart from that have you checked the windings on the bit that the brushes go onto? Get a copy of 'Motorcycle electrical techbook' by Haynes. Can let you know a decent bit about the old Lecky bits. Hope this helps.

  9. This thread topic has Goff's name ALL over it! :D

You'd be surprised how well Armor-All works on leather. ;)

 You sure that's not amore-all!

Oops sorry I digress (it's the thighs, lol), personaly i use 'Dales black dubbin on my riding leather's & clear dubbin on the other colours. Good stuff.

  10. Try cutting your throat with an angle grinder!! Quarter of an inch & I wouldn't be here. 76 stitches inside my neck & 32 (thankfully) along my jaw line. But hey, i'm still here 2 annoy if that's what it take!! LOL!

  11. Sound familiar???

My first (not so loving) wife said exactly the same thing, then asked me to make a choice between her & the bike!

    Eeeeerrrmmmm!!!!!!!
