  1. Hey guys I'm considering a Tail swap on my 1987 Yamaha FZR 1000.

I bought the Tail plastics and rider seat (Apparently from a 2007/2008 bike) ridiculously cheap on ebay and I was wondering the best way to go about a tail swap.

I've read heaps of forums on this but I'm undecided whether i should either:

1:Cut and modify the existing sub frame

2:Buy a R1 sub frame and mount that.

If so, I know they changed the sub frames in 09 but are all the previous years the same size etc??

Or 3: make a new sub frame....and by that I mean, I have a mate who is a boiler maker and he has agreed to try and make one if I pay for materials.

If so what materials would be best and does anyone have any plans of the design or a better one??

I also only have access to a stick welder...Would that be sufficient?

If not I'd try and hire/borrow a TIG.

    Thanks everyone!

  2. I bought and installed a new aftermarket tap on the bike as apparently OEM parts would have cost me a fair bit more,

It hasn't got the vaccum pipe connecting to the inlet manifold, Just the fuel to the carby.

My local mechanic i got the parts off just told me to block off the inlet manifold stub and turn off the petrol from the tank as soon as i turn the bike off after use.

The bike runs and sounds clean no knocks or rattles, but i think i might install a POD filter as my airbox is now clogged with bits of oil and fuel and I can't get inside it without braking it.

Any chance you would know what size/type of POD filter to install Tony?

Turns out when I changed the brake light switch the Neutral light came good, Not quite sure what happened but I guess it could've been from me shorting it out.

Almost time to get it registered!

    Can't wait :)

  3. Hey guys, I have a 1985 Yamaha SR 250.

Unfortunately I have 3 problems I need to deal with in order to get the bike registered.

    Brake light stays on

Neutral light stays on in dash

I need to reconnect the fuel lines and i'M unsure of the placement.

First of all my tail and brake lights are always on,

I realize that my tail light should stay on but the little button that my front brake lever pushes in to activate the brake light is stuck on.

When I changed the broken brake and clutch levers to new ones I greased them and I think i clogged the buttons

Is there anyway to fix them for instance WD 40 or silicon spray?

Or would I need new switches?

Secondly my neutral light is constantly turned on in the dash....

Would this problem be the same as the Brake light switch?

And finally when I bought the bike none of the fuel lines were connected...

Can I please get a diagram of the fuel system or a verbal run down of this as im new to bikes.

    THANKS GUYS!

  4. I thought that I'd finally get around to joining the forum after being lead here multiple times by google searches looking for advice.

My name is Luke and I'm from Australia.

    I have 2 Yamaha's

First of all a 1985 SR 250 I'm close to having registered

And secondly an 1987 FZR 1000 which being the sensible person I am....and not having access to anything else I learnt to ride on.

Unfortunately I have dropped it twice.....Both times just pushing it out of the way in the garage,The good news is that i havent damaged it bar a tiny, barely noticeable dent in the tank.

The FZR doesn't have any fairings as it was bought naked, I'm considering an R1 tail conversion on it but I don't have an R1 subframe or the know how to do it.

But the good news is that i may be starting a metal fabrication apprenticeship soon so it may happen.......In say 3 years when I can trust my life to my welding skills!!

    The SR250 I'm undecided about.....

I was going to Cafe racer it but I bought a Virago fender and partial inverted it and (from behind at the very least) it looks good.

The SR also has new chrome indicators I have installed and a new tail light....Which will be installed after i pass rego just incase the inspector feels rather critical on the day.

I try and post some photos and also go more into detail in the projects thread.
