  1. Sounds to me like a retrofit for an H4 and the 35/35 may be the way to go. Are the two filaments set to focus at different lengths? Thanks.
  2. I have a '79 XS 400F. The headlight works on high beam, but not low beam. I have power to the back of the bulb from the low beam switch, so I believe the low filament is bad. Here's the thing- I know there is not a lot of spare capacity in these charging systems. I would like to find a replacement in the stock wattage of 40w/30w. Most of the replacements I see are 60w/55w. I seldom ride at night, but I want everything to work, so I want my low beam. I do not, however, want to put a more powerful headlight in if it will tax the charging system. So, a couple of questions: 1) Where can I find a new, stock type 40w/30w headlight? (not interested in buying someone else's 30 year old headlight) 2) If you are running a 60w/55w on a stock late '70s XS 400 charging system, how does it work out? Have you ever had charging system issues? Thanks.

Thanks- that other site was where my pictures had already been uploaded....but anyhoo, thanks for clarifying. I appreciate it.
  4. Couple of questions: 1) When you put the new seals on, were the muffler mounts loose? If they are tight, they can bind and impede tightening the head pipe enough. Loosen the muffler mount, then tighten the head pipe and then tighten the muffler mount back up. 2) Did you confirm whether or not there were seals in there? When I took mine apart, I originally thought there were no seals in there. Turns out there was, but they were compressed and sooted up and looked like part of the head. If there are old seals in there, they may prevent the pipes being tightened down properly. If you have figured this out, please share. It could really be a help for people. Good luck!

Do you have to have a certain number of posts before you can do that? I just joined and it tells me I can not post images. Thanks.
  6. I am in the midst of a 1979 XS 400 resurrection and I'm bringing it back to original condition. It has sat without running for about 10 years. After 4 or 5 weeks of taking it slow, it now runs well...and that was its own adventure. I have a little work to do on the front end, but everything behind the front fork (other than the seat) has been cleaned, polished, painted, adjusted, serviced, etc. Here is a "before" and a couple of "durings"..."afters" to follow...someday http://www.motoredbikes.com/picture.php?albumid=49&pictureid=5909 http://www.motoredbikes.com/picture.php?albumid=49&pictureid=6297 http://www.motoredbikes.com/picture.php?albumid=49&pictureid=6300
  7. I double checked my earlier answer against an exploded diagram- still looks like the breather (vent) tube. Good luck!
  8. I think that is the vent tube for the crankcase, not a vacuum tube. Originally, it would have been attached to the intake track but since the original air boxes have been ditched, there is nowhere to attach it. Any small air filter or oil breather that fit it would be a good idea. An auto parts store should have something to fit. It will spew oil if you overfill the crankcase, but otherwise it just vents. It would be good to have some way of keeping dust out of there.
