  1. So as I'm still waiting on my 175's barrel to come back, I got looking at my brother in laws DT 400. I was thinking, would I be able to swap the 400 engine into my frame? Would it be easier if I were to just swap the 175's electronics over? It's been talked that I might get the entire bike given to me so the thought's been playing around in my head lately :P

  2. Ok think i may have found the problem, although i cannot confirm as it has been stripped to the bare frame and i have purchased £300 worth of new parts. The main jet was only a 120 and it is supposed to be 130 standard. I have ordered a 130 and 140 to test when its back together. The engine sounds sweet but i want to pressure check the barrel and have it cleaned anyrate. Frame and swing are being powder coated this week with new swing are bushes. Replacing all bolts with stainless steel and having various bits cleaned up and resprayed. Leaving the side panels and tank as they are for now may do them at alater date. I think within a month i may have it all back together :o)Perks of my Job :o))))

Feel free to look at some of my other restorations on bikepics.com under clive wheatley. Nice original DT400c on there as well as a few TS185 and 250s

Sounds like a pretty awesome job you've got :o

  3. hi the bike has had new parts all over have paperwork to prove it the carb was fine and timeing is electronic electrics all fine and there is fuel in the cylinder , the only thing left is the head were the oil is leaking from the gasget the 1mm overbore is not run in yet , and the bolts have been known to come loose as they may need re torqueing at a few hundread miles .

    EDIT: I misunderstood the post!

  4. great adventure, reminds me of a talking heads song......

Awesome adventure! I think I remember you posting here when the Tenere broke down in BC...? I remember thinking about what an amazing trip it would be to do some sort of cross continent / country tour. Wish I could have been in your shoes!

  5. Hi Cameron

    Welcome aboard.

Great to have more Canucks on the site. What town in NB are you from? My wife and I took the motorhome across Canada in '09. Didn't make Nfld so we went back again last summer and spent 6 weeks in Nfld, Labrador and NB. Had a great time. Spent most of our NB time in the Dieppe area. Ate lots lobster but I think we missed a few. Some day I'd like to ride around the Maritimes on my bike.

    Rocky

In the woods about 45 minutes south of Fredericton is where I'm located. If you plan to take another trip this way you have to take the extra 4 and a half hours to go to Nova Scotia, amazing driving roads and the Annapolis Valley is a great great spot.

  6. Hello all, after coming back here and sapping tips and information out of all of you I figure I owe you an introduction. My name's Cameron, I'm from New Brunswick, Canada and I'm trying to juggle school and hobbies. I bought a 79' DT 175 in December in hopes of restoring it to something road worthy, it's going slowly but things are starting to pick up again. I've yet to ride a bike at all and still haven't got my licence but now know a fair amount about my DT :P This forums helped me a ton with my build already and I'm sure will continue to be a great help down the road!

  7. Hi guys

Can anyone shed some light on model information please? I've just bought a DT175 mx - it has frame and engine prefix 2KR. I can't remember from my youth the differences between the various models.

This bike has the silver box section swinging arm. Did that come before or after the model with the black tubular swinging arm?

    Cheers

    Lee

Your bike sounds like the 80's model. The Box swing arm came after the black tube swing arm(77-79). Here's some pictures of the different models over the years it helps a lot when trying to pinpoint just what year your bike is. http://www.bikepics.com/yamaha/dt175/

i think it must have come b4. I just picked up a 74 dt 175 myself for a new project. Maybe u can help me i am looking for the book for that model i know that this model is grouped with other class 100, 125 etc. hopefully u can help.

Supply some more information or better yet some pictures and I'll try to help you out :D

  8. Going to work is a lot better yes, but coming home.........awesome!

BTW Happy st Pat's day mate. :D

Thats a bad cough VeZ, yep Renthal bars are a good mod, like the look of them myself too, maybe braided brake hoses too. :D

So I just read through this thread and I have a quick question. I have my 175's exhaust off at the moment and I'm wondering if this would be a worthwhile thing to do while I'm waiting to get the barrel back. On my '79 would it just be a matter of getting off the piece in the exhaust and upping the jet, or is there a lot more too it then that?

  9. A Very Rough Cut, but works to show the kinda thing im working on.

Ignore the audio, had some retarded fashion students next door screaming and squealing about a hat or somthing. Took alot not to go in there and strangle them with their "fashionable pointless scarf things"....

Very cool! Nice camera work, looks professional. Favorite focus bit was the one at 0:12. I don't have much info myself but I think I saw a whole article on the old Air cooled 125's in a bike magazine. I'll see if I can find it, the writer was from that era and did a lot of nostalging while talking about the bike. He'd be a good person to get in contact with.

  10. Hi everyone,i hope someone can shed some light for me on this subject.I recently purchased a 175mx which has been used as a field bike. Its in a very sorry state but i would like to rebuild it and put it back on the road where it belongs.Unfortunately as usual with field bikes, there is no paper work what so ever,i only have bill of sale and frame numbers.I spoke to dvla and they told me to contact owners club. Can anyone tell me the procedure of finding out the reg number or year, and how to go about registering it.Many thanks guys

I'm in the exact same boat as you.

  11. Hi I'm new to the forum, i'm looking for any information on where to start searching for parts for a 1978 DT400. I recently had one handed down to me from my Dad and I would like to restore it. Any help would be grea, the local stealerships won't work on anything older than 1990.

    You lucky duck.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. First off get yourself a Ebay account and search every few days "DT400" followed by whatever part you need. People dissemble old DT's and sell the parts all the time.

If you're willing to throw some money around or you just can't seem to find the part you're looking for, Bikebandit.com is a great place for parts. Here is the DT400 Page for you. Here

Finally, and this might surprise you, Kijiji.com is also a good place. People can post free classified adds on it. Either search for your bike in your area, or just post a wanted add for information and parts. I did this and found someone who lives 15 minutes away from me who had also done a refurb and gave me a set of blinkers for 15$

  12. Great tip on the wd40 leak test - my old DT has the same symptom and I suspected a leak someplace as well.

Great advice here, I took the carb apart on my 79 and the entire jet hole was filled with gunk. Not sure if it fixed my idle problem yet, but I'm sure it helped something :D
