  1. There are difference in brake light operation, some use a pressure switch others a lever switch. You can install a pressure switch, they are more reliable, no matter which type you have now. I would replace the lines with SS braided for the biggest improvement.
  2. As long as there isn't any damage or rust almost any master cylinder can be rebuilt. Sometimes you need circle clip removers to get retaining clips out, and you'll need denatured alcohol to clean the parts. A clean work area is essential. I use a shotgun cleaning brush to scrub the bore, the brass is very soft and does not damage the steel bore. It also helps clean the entryway of any rust on the outside. Replacing with a used MC is always an easier option as long as the MC is working properly. I think any used MC will need rebuilding at some point so you are only delaying the inevitable. If you do go that route you need to flush the MC completely and clean the sludge from the reservoir. Personally I would rebuild my own with a fresh kit rather than adapt another model's MC to fit it. Another option is aftermarket MC made by Magura and others that are new and have warranties. I got one for 90 dollars including the lever and brake switch. Brakes are too important to fart around with, stopping beats accelerating on the list of essential bike features.
  3. I'll look into the sito pipes. I tried to increase the font size because it was so tiny on my screen I couldn't see it. It appears bigger when posted than when typed. Who sells sito pipes?

    XS400 pipes

I bought a 2-1 for a CM400A 2 years ago. I got the painted head pipe and chrome can. The paint came off the head pipe after the first ride. MAC did not follow through with an RMA as promised, and I got tire of bothering them. Eventually sold the bike. The pipe was loud and buzzy. I had to stuff fiberglass inside the can to get it reasonably quiet. It was not a "performance" sound, just annoying. The bends on the head pipe were not accurate, I had a lot of trouble getting it lined up straight. I replaced the mounting hardware with stainless steel because the cheap screws, bolts and nuts they sent would have rusted in a short time. The pipe was made in China (the nice girl on the phone admitted they only coat and packaged it in the US) and for what it cost them to make and then charge over 200 dollars for it they should use better coatings, decent hardware and QA it better. Performance? Didn't notice a change. They claimed no rejet required, I think it ran a little lean until I stuffed the can with fiberglass. The baffle in mine rattled like a paint can. I had to wrap the forward section with muffler tape and tap it back in to keep it from rattling at certain speeds. I'm no fan of MAC pipes, I'm sorry to say there are few choices out there. Next bike project I see with bad pipes I'm looking at what is available besides MAC, including OEM on ebay. Of course there are probably plenty of satisfied customers who love their MAC pipes. I've never met anything but disgruntled customers who said "they were the only thing I could find".
  5. Hi, NOOB here. I have an 81 XS400 I did a ground up restoration of but I still need a set of pipes. The exhaust I have now consists of MAC slip ons and the original down tubes which were cut off just in front of the crossover pipe. I'm no fan of the MAC 2-1 for looks, sound, price or quality (the MAC mufflers I have now are losing the chrome as I type) so I was hoping there would be any other way to get a set of 2-2 pipes for this bike. Alternatively, if anyone has a nice set of pipes lying around PM me please.
