  1. they are similar style bikes, albeit the Jawa is a bit more upright and is only 6kg heavier...

for £25 the RD350 Calipers may be a worthwhile investment, but first im focusing on getting the forks and the rst of the running gear sorted before i start tricking it up too much

Hot shit, im getting under way with this now!

Yay for getting under way :D :D

getting the calipers that go with the forks saves hours and hours of fucking about, making adaptor plates, shaving bits of here and there etc. If you go for RD forks, go for the calipers and, the front wheel if you can! Again, mounting a different front wheel can mean making new spindles and spacers, the speedo drive won't fit, you might likely have to change the wheel bearings to fit the spindle.

I honestly and truly don't mean to sound negative, I really want you to get this thing on the road, I'm just pointing out easier ways of doing things.

transplanting a whole RD front end might not be too easy, are the forks the same diameter as the Jawa ones? Get outside with a caliper and find out, don't rely on interweb bollox. If they are, go for it. If not, how much different? Can you get a complete set of yokes? They can be made to fit (I'm about to do it with some FZR ones) but again needs a part making, or can you get the Jawa ones bored out to fit, if there's enough meat?

  2. Does it not have a cup on the underneath of the filler cap? Mine did. Unscrew cap, fill cup with oil every time you fill the tank with petrol, and sorted. No calcuations required :)

Running it off the crank might be (quite a lot) too fast, and result in over-oiling. Changing the carb could take you hours to rejet to suit - do you want to risk holing the pistons if you run too lean?

Worth looking into, and finding out more of the pitfalls and benefits and how much work would be required for the outcome you get.

Try riding it for a bit before making major changes to the fuelling system, I'm sure everyone on here would agree with that.

  3. the RD calipers are going to be way better than the Jawa ones, not sure why you'd want to re-use them :)

£50 sounds ace for a set of shox. The two worries are the mountings (hole or fork) and which at which end, and the length of the shock.

If they are for bikes of approximately the same weight, you're laughing.

  4. heres my take on the squids on gsxrs,

(of course, I ride a "vintage piece of crap" my opinion is mine. yours is likely to differ.)

    1) SPOKES. first off real motorcycles have them. wire ones too, not just 5 metal ones. those are called mags and belong on bmx bikes. everything else belongs on a scooter or a cage.

    2) if the gas tank is molded to your legs something is wrong, you have been in a wreck. If you ride laying down over your gas tank, it looks like you are humping it. get a woman!

    3) Wheelies and nose stands: MOTHERFUCKER GROW UP!

    4) splitting traffic: how can anyone be that stupid. I have heard it too many times, my bike will overheat. (only if its a piece of shit) you just want to get to the front of the line so you can feel cool when you race away at the green. youre nothing more than a hyperactive piece of shit. you are the reason I have air horns on my truck. and im not afraid to use them. seeing you have a full body twitch when i hit them makes my day.

just a rant that i felt like getting off my chest.

yes irresponsible riders can hate me all they want.

im just brazen. sorry. join a forum and start talking smack, no offense intended.

dude, I hope you never go anywhere near a real city :D:lol:

seriously, you ride a bike and you think it's funny to make other riders "twitch"? have a word with yourself

  5. ooh, v nice :D.

just thinking about it now, i could add a topbox and some panniers and make the Jawa a tourer...

too good to butcher for a streetfighter project methink...

top box and panniers = ace idea. motox handguards (or 4 pint plastic milk cartons), the biggest fairing you can find, then off to The Elephant Rally :D :D :D

forks rechromed is a waste of money. anything you can jam in there will be fine

they make much better rat/survial bikes than streetfighters LOL :D just the wrong shape to start with :o

  6. This is a 94/94 (M reg) bike, and if my 1990 DT is autolube i would expect the later Jawa to be aswell, only time will tell, lol

couldn't pick it up today though ice was too bad and we wouldn't have been able to get up the drive, so im in the process of arranging to collect it from swindon mid-week

Dude, seriously, set your expectations back 25 years! The year it was made has nothing to do with the design and technology it was made with. Your DT is a modern Japanese bike designed on computer by modern Japanese designers and assembled with care and dedication by robots and Japanese workers. A Jawa is an early 70's design made in Eastern Europe where tractors are ministers and people sit down to a dinner of boiled radiators. Seriously low-tech stuff, I'm not kidding.

the CZ Riders Club used to do a badge "CZ - from the people who brought you Semtex" :D

What you learn from this bike will not help you except in a career of serious bodging!

  7. They are a good club, thay have an active menbership, they even have stands at classic bike shows and have their own rally weekend and stuff, I got a mate whos a member.

there used to be a Riders club around, they were a bit more of a laugh than the owners club :D

We had one of these a few years back. "We" as in we bought a CZ 350 twin between 6 of us and registered it in the club name as no-one actually wanted their name on the log book! :o

6 of us paid a fiver each and that was less than the value of the tax that was on it. It had a wooden box with a side-car, and a truly massive rear sprocket for carrying heavy weights. Which it could, with ease. Damn thing killed a lot of trees as we all learnt the excitement of controlling an outfit LOL (I never killed a tree, but I scared a bit of traffic at first  )

Wasn't even nearly autolube, they were premix :o measuring cup built into the petrol cap. You must, must, MUST add two smoke oil every time you fill up. Get a top box (it won't hurt the handling, or the looks  ) to carry round a couple of bottles.

In all fairness, it was quite reliable. Rear sprocket bearing went and we changed it using CZ special tool no. 6 (a paving brick) cos we couldn't find a hammer and the brick was nearer. Eventually the electrics went and it was run from a car battery in the top box and charged once a week :-(

    Good luck with it, anyway!

  8. its most likely a leccy fault. i just put new piston rings in it so i wouldn't have thought that is the problem

had a good look at the wiring loom at the front and its a bit of a mess to say the least, the black wires are all green and corroded, so looks like during the week i will have to be replacing those.

whilst im at it i may aswell change the plug and HT lead

i dont think i could sell it... not just yet...

:( If the wiring has is corroding where you can see it easily, I would wonder what it's doing where you can't see it? Your trip to Ireland is going to be an ace adventure, if you give it the right amount of prep. Have you seriously considered replacing the whole loom? Shouldn't be that hard to come up with one on ebay, or maybe even a genuine new Yamaha one?

Also, you have heard of VWP ? THE knees of the bee and special parts of any other insect for wiring motor bikes. Proper wire, replacement connectors (not bullets), heat shrink tubing, self amalgamating tape (a f-kin ace idea for motorbikes!) and etc. beyond belief B)

  9. HI FOLKS, IM NEW TO THIS SITE AND I THINK ITS BRILL.. NOW DO YOU THINK I WOULD BE TAKING THE PI** IF I WAS TO ADVERTISE SOME YAMAHA SPARES ON THIS SITE, I JUST DONT WANT PEOPLE TO THINK IM GONNA USE THE SITE TO MAKE MONEY OR JUST TO ADVERTISE STUFF THATS ALL. I GOT SOME BITS AND BOBS TO CLEAR OUT OF MY SHED THATS ALL AND THEY ARE GETTING IN MY WAY A BIT.

    THANKS DAZ

turn y'caps lock off and use the "For Sale" section. :D

  10. I managed to squees the old girl in the shed to start the clean up,

Many hours later the wife pops in, "there's a funny smell in here" she say`s,

NO SHIT, might be, Petrol, Oil, Turps, Paint, polish, OR ME,

There's bits of bike all over, I bet she`s in there tomorrow with a duster,

New of course, God love her, And all such girls, Mark.

Lock the shed, hide the key, quick quick!!

Get one of the neutraldol anti-smell bulb things from poundland or boots or the like. They don't mask odours, they remove them. Bloody ace things to have around :D

  11. Cant you get those screen covers that go over the VDU anymore? They used to lessen the glare therefore lessening (and often eradicating) the strain.

they were always crap, Goff, and modern screens shouldn't need them. Hard to clean, they didn't fit properly and generally a nightmare :(

To the OP - find a decent optician, you DON'T have to use one that work recommends. You might have to pay the difference for the eye test - Specsavers is something like £15 and the optician I use charges like £19, but it'll be worth it.

Also, you work should pay for the part of the prescription that is for VDU usage, you shouldn't get the whole cost.

I hope you get someone who can explain the problem you are having with it becoming gobbledegook.

Also, seriously consider how you sit at the screen.Your 'elf and safety bod should be able to do an assesment. Your back must be straight and you shouldn't look down at the monitor, it needs to be raised up quite high. A wrist rest is a great help - you should keep your forearms fairly straight. I had back and neck problems an got referred to a specialist who said all my problems were caused by me sitting badly! She was right, too!

  12. Did I mention? aswell as using my steering lock, I have a tiger chained to the handlebars, I don't remember the last time i fed him, it's bloody hard to get on your bike with an angry tiger attached to it though :(

Siberia have some good ones if you're looking for a particular brand, or if you've got a really big bike, maybe you want to think about getting a liger, goole image liger, they're mental!

Cool! I want one, much better than a disc lock! Needs a side-car to take it with you tho.?

  13. Well seeing as Hein Gericke have 20% off on Sercurity atm i will have to buy the best i can, no excuses

Im not a big fan of little dogs myself.

If you want a dog, get a propper dog ;)

check on the Almax / Captain Cropper vids on youtube before buying anything from HG! :o

  14. if you buy a bike lock and chain make sure its an almax best on the market,

I use a disc lock and chain lock, maybe you might want an alarm or imobaliser (sp) on it?

Depends how much your willing to spend as well

+1 for the Almax. Check out the videos of YouTube of Captain Cropper destroying other chains - especially "sold secure" stuff like Abus, Oxford etc.

Money saving tip - another forum I hang about on, www.therevcounter.com, one of their members is "Almax" and say they'll give a discount on Almax chains if you're a forum member. another user, Zanx, has posted a lot of advice on chains, ground anchors etc.

  15. I know what you mean Goff, my short lil legs ache after a while on forward pegs, I end up riding like I'm on a deck chair  (well it's a Harley so not much difference I guess  )

On the plus side, me little bod fits the R6 perfecto :)

:o would scare the shit out of me having those fangs lunging at me goolies while riding along!!

nicely done paint job but scary LOL

  16. This one still causes quite a bit of amazement in me, the fact that the legal system didn't laugh outright at her and tell her to grow a brain and get out of the courtroom. I actually use this example when people ask me why the judicial system is messed up. We now have laws for everything, including having to include a legal warning on insulated coffee cups pointing out that the beverage inside may be hot.

I'm still waiting for the day a man drops an ice cold drink into his laps and his balls shrivel up causing him to get into an accident and getting a huge settlement for that.

Can we settle this once and for all? The woman was not at fault- the coffee was undrinkably hot , was kept and served at a temperature that would and did cause serious burns. The company knew this and didn't give a shit, that's why she sued and won.

And I'm not saluting no flag for nobody. I'm English, I'm proud of it, I love my country. But I'm English and feel no urge to rub other people noses in it. that's for lesser, insecure nations. The true Englishman knows we are superiour by right of birth - no need to brag about it, that's unseemly. Teach some more pride, but don't decsend into jingo-ism.

Other cultures coming over here and working? Well, that's better than we did to them! What line do you do for them being forigeners? Lots of "them" were born here!

Agree with most of the rest of it, we could do with more common sense. However, the country is not in a worse state than it was when I was born - there is a great deal of scaremongering shit published with the intent of frightening the populace so they will more easily accept truly unBritish ideas like no jury of your peers, no right to silence, no more innocent until proved guilty , a lower standard of evidence, surveliance at all times, ID cards (a wholly unBritish idea), not allowed to freely assemble, not allowed to protest anywhere near the House of Commons. that's the truly scary shit, and most people don't notice what's gone until they need it and end up in nick.

  17. The justice system is crap.

    Why is it crap?

Because the laws and punishements are decided, and handed out by Magistrates and Judges who have NO FUCKIN IDEA what its like to live in the real world.

Surrounded by their expensive cars, in their expensive house, probably miles from nowhere therefore practically crime-free - they have no understanding of how ordinary people are affected by crime and the people who carry out such things.

These Judges and Magistrates are all nearing pension age (and above) so were brought up in a much more law-abiding society - its time to pension these blinkered wrinklies off and employ people who actually KNOW what really goes on in todays shitty society thats full of scumbags and people who really should have been put down at birth. :madflame:

apply to be a local Justice of the Peace or a lay magistrate - they were looking for local people around here, I'd think they do around most places. I did seriously consider applying, but mostly I'm a lazy git

  18. Hello Gentleman,

Im taking this topic back from the dead because I just bought and am in the midst of restorin a 1977 xs360. She looks like crap and isnt fully running yet. I replaced the tires, battery, filters, wires, spark plugs, cleaned and rebuilt the carbs, pet cock, and front brake master cylinder, cleaned out and de-rusted the tank, and air filters. Ive sanded a bunch of rust off using a dremel tool and polished/painted a bunch of parts.

I plan on giving it a spray bomb paint job because the pain is terrible and the decals are faded.

Is there anything else I should consider doing?

    -Matt

    take some pain-killers 1st! :D

replace the points, condensors, probably the coils, plug caps and leads. I think the 360's are points? If so, I'd go wholly electronic ignition, or replace as I've said. If I'm talking nonsense, then I apologise! Have you replaced the front brake caliper seals yet? You'll likely need to. Best idea is to take the lot off, stick a spare set of handlebars or rod in your bench vice, put the master cylinder on there and pump the piston out on your bench.

  19. I've sorted out problems with noisy neighbours simply by asking. Being on my way to a job and having a sledgehammer in my hand is always a total coincidence :D

other than that, plank of wood with nails in, painted black, behind/in front the passenger side wheels or where ever he's not likely to look. Bang bang, every saturday till he shuts up? Got a welder? weld some nails together (grind off any galvanising 1st, it's poisonous) at right angles - caltraps, fun for all occasions!

destructing other peep's cars with thermite / expanding foam is slightly OTT. certainly for a warning shot...

On a more legal side, contact the local council etc. ASBOs can be issued for lots of things and have a low burden of proof - they are there to curb anti-social behaviour, which is what this person is doing.

  20. The bodywork looks ok :)

restoring it for the entertainment value, just as a hobby, just because, might be fun.

Restoring it for resale at a profit is not going to happen. :(

I'd pay, at most, £50-£75. I wouldn't have thought it'd take much to get it running and MoTed.

Then, well, you've got an XS250. They're not that grate, akshully, as they say on teh internets.

Doesn't go, doesn't stop, doesn't really handle. For trundling along gently and cheaply, y'can't argue with it :)

  21. Seen a RD400 shoehorned into a FS1E it was on ebay recently. also a Cagiva mito with a CR500 mx engine in it

    merv

yes, it's all been done  but it's rarely worth the effort, I never said never. Unless you are going to do something mental and fun like a CR lump, just futzing with a 125 isn't worth it.

y'have to ask, how long did it take to get the CR lump in the mito? how much fabrication was involved? Uprating the brakes/suspension/frame, was that done so it wouldn't be a deathtrap? how much did it cost?

I'm not a naysayer, I'm all in favour of building things for the sheer entertainment value of it! It's just briefly worth thinking "before I get the angle grinder out, is what I'm about to embark on going to have been worth the blood sweat & tears by the time it's done, or will I have knackered at least one perfectly good motorcycle to no avail?"

if the answer is "yes, it'll be teh awesum!!" then away y'go. If the answer is "hmmm, maybe I should just buy a faster / shinyer / wider bike from gumtree and go down the pub with the time and money saved..."
