  1. that may not be really accurate, sometimes when you test a spark plug you have to do everything right and if one thing's off... you dont get a spark. careful, you could also ruin things like coils and what-not.

im not familiar with this bike but maybe i could suggest a few things.

start easy and cheap: make sure your engine is getting sufficient fuel, check your lines and everything. It might also be your idle needs adjusting, observe it the next time you run it, if the RPM's fall steadily but surely it could be your carburetors.

But it probably is an electrical thing with your regulator, i'm just giving you a few things you can easily check that wont cost anything :)

  2. So with the engine running, if you switch main beam on, engine dies instantly

What happens with engine running and dipped headlamp?

With engine not running do both dipped and main beams work ok?

On the diagram, it shows the bike has no headlight on /off switch, so they are permanently on this agrees with what you stated in your initial post, that they are as you said "running lights", According to the diagram the only time they go off (Whether dipped or main beam) is when the starter button is being pressed, Which does make sense as maximum power from the battery would be needed to turn the engine.

completely correct; they are always on except when the starter button is depressed... and no, when the bike is not running, only the high beams work, when i toggle the switch to normal beams they go out. And when the bike is running, the normal beams do not work(no lights), and when i toggle to high, the bike cuts off. Like i said, this is very strange, i almost think my bike is just messing with me because it worked like a week ago.

  3. actually lookimng at the wiring diagram myself, before i could'nt understand it... but i put the effort in to make sense of it. I think i narrowed it down to a list of things i can check myself... 1)the switch and its contacts 2) The start switch has something wrong with it 3) the 20A fuse burned out

Any more variables that i didn't think of above would be of great assistance though still. :D

  4. What's with all the colour schemes? Oh well at least black's not so bad, despite the red stain on the tank... Everybody to their own i suppose.

actually, i didnt get to put the picture in, but the tail that looked grayish white was just primed... not actual;ly white. I painted it half black, half red. and there is only one colour scheme; Black & Red... it all comes together if you saw the biuke all together.... the fairings, tail, tank everything. i will make another vid of me riding soon so you guys can reallly see how it came out as i intended. :):D:rolleyes:

  5. Hi

Not absolutely familiar with this bike, but sounds like a fault in the switch - either wiring or more likely a bad contact/earth.

The brake light issue sounds like a problem with the rear brake switch - you could test this manually by pulling on the actuating lever/spring with the ignition on and seeing if the light works, it could just be an adjustment issue, or bad contacts.

As to the main lights a wiring diagram would help, but in the meantime dismantle the switch gear and clean the contacts first.

    Good luck

Here's a wiring diagram i found that is from an fzr600... it is not my bike, as my bike is an ancestor, but it is close. Note; my bike also has two headlights, this one only has 1.

  6. Hey ppl, these forums have been a major help to me along my restoration project with my '88 FZ600. The Latest issue i have been having is with the Headlights. In previous posts i have told how i have gotten it running, idling, and it charges the system fine.

When I first Got It to Run; everything seemed to work fine. When i turned the key to 'on', the headlights and the tail lights lit up like they were running lights, which i guess that they function as. After a few times of running it and a few days later, i turned the key on to be mildly concerned with the lights not coming on... i figured it was a fluke and i hit some switch i forgot about.

Now it has been about two weeks and the lights do not come on when i turn the bike on. The Blinkers DO work. The tail light comes on ok, now that i replaced the bulb. Also, the High beams will go on if the bike is not running, however, if it is running, switching to high beams instantly kills the bike, even when very highly charged after running for awhile.

Another thing that might be helpful in diagnosing, when i switch on the 'high'

the blue indicator light DOES come on, so maybe the switch isn't bad...

Is this something very obvious? I am not extremely proficient in wiring, i know how to trace wires and how to crimp and splice...

Also, there is no exposed or uninsulated wires along the whole length of the system.

    thx

  7. it might just be something as simple as the line being kinked or grabbed by something. trace it down and check if it is held back by anything. Also, if your bike is anything like my fz600 when you full the lever does the cable connector thing on top of the clutch cover do anything? if not, then it is your clutch line, no doubt about it. if it does move and your line gives response than it is most likely your clutch... maybe your plates stuck together if it sat for a while...

  8. When i bought my 88 fz600 it would give me a "put-put" when trying to start and then would die... This was a symptom of the Pickup Coil (not Ignition Coil) being faulty. The P/U coil is under the first cover on the left side, closest to the front of the bike. Open that up and you will see a little teardrop shaped rotor that passes by two black diode looking things on a metal base. each one of those black things time the ignition for two cylinders. check the tiny metal part for any damage, this is another major issue with ignition. Also check the wires that lead from it to see if there is anything under the bike they are touching.

Another thing that could lead to there being no spark; is the ignitor box, when i bought my bike i noticed there was two IC Igniter Boxes, an older one in the under seat box. Maybe this is a common problem, so with your fancy-dancy multimeter, check the current of wires goin in and also OUT of Your IC Ignitor Box. It is Easy to find, It says; IC IGNITOR right on it...

I know what you mean by the wiring to be more fun than a barrel of monkeys to figure out! I have a really neat Kill Switch; When i turn the high beams on, it kills the bike! Got any tips for me?

-But the ignition wires don't seem to be in the main wiring harness thing, so they are relatively easy to trace, also wheck the wires between the Ignitor box and the ignition coils, and the unnecessary coupling plug for them half way down the wire.

GrizzlyDan-Chillax a little dude, he's trying his best man, i don't think he's trying to insult your intelligence or accomplishments, you helped me out a lot with other things, your a great problem solver. :D

  10. Hey thanks guys, that was the problem! it was overfilled! thank goodness i changed the oil before i ran it anymore! the sight glass was black and the clutch cover was painted black also, so i thought it was a hex bolt!!! jeez- once i drained it i saw exactly what it was! I filled it back up with fresh Valvoline 10w-40 motorcycle grade. Thanks alot ppl! I Posted a vid of my bike on youtube last night. type in "FZ600 "Scar"" in the youTube search bar, tell me what you think!

  11. i had the same symptom of not getting fuel to my engine after i tried to wet sand it... i had to take the tank off, remove the petcock or tap (mine also has the pipe shaped pre-filter) and throw it in my bath tub and clean out the tank, petcock and hoses and anything that is before the carbs.. then dry thoroughly and fill with gas, it may take a little vacuum pressure (ie sucking on the hose) to get it started but once it starts it should be ok.... it was the problem for me.

hope my crazy babble might help

-anyone have an oil spewing problem? :P:(

  12. My recently bought bike has been sitting for at least 1 year. I cleaned the carbs a few days ago. I also added SAE 10w-40 (2Qts.) It ran a little rough the first few times. I started it today and now it runs great, idles great, throttle response is great... but the breather filter thing atop the right clutch cover bubbles out oil!!!! i did recently add oil, did i add too much? The oil drips down the side and burns into smoke on the exhaust pipe... has anyone ever have this problem? Is it something else? --P.S. when i rev it to above 6K-7K it literally globs out oil and burns into white smoke!!! What do i do? :o:huh::unsure::blink:

  13. have you cleaned out the carbs, no idle is usually blocked jets.

GREAT! YES I DID CLEAN THE CARBS! I then started it and now it runs great, idles great, throttle response is great... but the breather filter thing atop the right clutch cover bubbles out oil!!!! i did recently add oil, did i add too much? The oil drips down the side and burns into smoke on the exhaust pipe... did you ever have this problem? it has been sitting for a long while, maybe it is just burning off old stuff

  14. Hey I just bought an old '88 FZ600 and revamped it. Needless to say the bike had no owner's manual along with air filters, and no starter solenoid, among others.... I opened the oil plug on top of the clutch cover and saw no shining of liquid of any kind.

I Added Two Quarts of 10W-40, started it, it ran and revved great then i turned it off to go running inside and scream with joy... I strted it again when i was calm and now it has no throttle response, and if anything revs high

and slowly yet steadily falls down to a stall.

Is it the oil i put in? What type of oil does this bike take? How Much should i Put in? If not the oil any tips on what it could be?

(P.S.; I also took the carbs off and cleaned the bowls, floats and jets. But the malfunction did seem to happen right after the oil addition...)

    Thanks :huh::blink::unsure: :unsure: :unsure:

  15. I have a 1986 model with cone filters & being in England with less emision laws you can take the hoses off & put blanking plugs on the manifolds, just using the vacuum pipes for balancing the carbs. If anything you might find the bike performs better. You need to check the emision laws in whatever state you are in to find out if these pipes need to be connected to anything (instead of the airbox).

thanks; i plugged the hole and left the tube on. I Got it Started With Ether, and she revved awesome! Then Stalls and died. So now i need help keeping it idled.....

  16. Hey, You and me are in the same boat; I got an older 1988 FZ600 and am working on restoring it. Its been a really fun project so far, costly and labor intensive, but fun.

If you need Fairings, OEM ones will run you probably more than your bike's worth; try www.airtech-streamlining.com -They make fiberglass bodywork for way less and for any bike, also fiberglass is better in some ways than ABS plastics...

Bikebandit is an ok place to look for parts and diagrams, but prices for older bikes are astronomical!

One thing i like about my Yamaha, that i recently learned and has been a big help to me; Is that many Yamaha bikes of the same year range (1986-1989) but different models with same cc's seem to share engines. for instance my bike shares an engine with not just other Fz600's but aslo FJ600's, XJ600's and also YX600 Radians. SOmetimes an ebay search for one bike dosent lead to as many results as searching relatives.

    Good Luck, by the way.

  17. yeah, theres another parts schematic @ www.bikebandit.com, they all seem to be the same one, which doesn't show where the hose connects to, just that there is a hose present between the carbs, which i already know.

  18. I am rebuilding an 88 FZ600. When i Got the bike it had no air filters or airbox. I have bought Independent cone filters for it, but i noticed something, a breather tube connects the two inner intake manifolds, but the two outer ones also have a hose, but with a three way connector linking it, there was nothing connected to this when i bought it, and i can't find it anywhere in the manual! What the heck does this thing connect to?!?!?!?! does it malfunction if it is left unconnected?

  19. Hey man, maybe u saw my bike on bike pics; the 88 fz600 the crappy one that is orange, white and blue, and black.... it sucks, (recently painted it) I have a very new tail however- I noticed this when i bought it... i think it is a TZ-250 tail but not 100% on that. Check out www.airtech-streamlining.com they have all bodywork for any bike, year, make, model, etc. maybe you can help me out with what my tail is. BTW my name is junker07 on there as well.

And yes, that tail fits my stock seats perfectly, tail light fits fine, bolt onto tabs on bottom corners of tank and slips on from the back- ver comfortable too :D

  20. Both CLYMER and HAYNES make a pretty good manual, troubleshooting sections, wiring diagrams, the works... pick them up anywhere (their sites, ebay, bikebandit.com) i think you can get owner's manuals from yamaha.

  21. All right, thanks guys; i actually ended up getting the majority of them out today... i cut up some card paper, rolled it so it would unroll once inside the hole (to catch the damn rocks as they flew past every time i tilted it) and funneled them out the hole.

There is one last pebble that is stubborn, and thanks for the tip on the dust, i rinsed the tank out a few times and there was a ton of dirty drainage, it looked like rust was in there too... i filled it up with gas and got a cheap fuel filter on the way home (i figure why waste a good one if it will just get clogged soon with whatever is in there still?)

  22. Recently bought an older (1988) Fz600 and brought it home and left it until i had more time to work on it. I forgot about the type of neighborhood i live in (not so good) it only took about a couple of weeks for me to hear voices of kids at night coming from around my bike. I scared them off, and now a few more weeks later, now that i have more time to work on it, i discover the bastards were shoving handfuls of pebbles in to my gas tank! I removed everything off it (petcock, cap, float and fuel level assembly) and have gotten the most of them out by trying to get them to roll over any of the three holes. Please help! ANY TIPS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

  23. thankyou for your help wires was missing so sorted it out and sold it as have found other bike

Did you sell it to me like a month ago?? lol. Your'e not from connecticut are you? I just bought an 88 fZ 600 and am also having trouble starting it. I am really happy restoring it though, anyway; does anyone know what type of oil it takes SAE 10W30??? Obviously i didn't get a manual with the bike. :)
