For the Vintage Yamahas

  1. Started by nona52,

I just got a 1987 XV 535, my first cycle in over 30 years. It seems to be in very good, running condition...only 5300 miles. Other than replacing the tires and initial PM, I was looking at what would be available for a luggage rack. It has, what appears to be, the factory sissy bar. There are mounting holes on the insides of the uprights for a luggage rack, I think. Does anyone know what the factory part number, or any other info, for the factory rack? Any other options? Thanks

Just got one, and am having a heck of a time starting the fool thing. The feller I bought it from had a bit of trouble starting it, and my neighbor got it going with a bit of hassle. It is kick only and I am wondering if I am just not doing it right. HELP!

Can I use an XS650 clutch lever/lever bracket assembly (like the ones on mikesxs.com) on an XS400S clutch cable? They look the same from the pics I can find, but want to make sure before I purchase.

My bike has been sitting for almost 5 years, and was not properly stored. The old gas was in the tank and carbs. I was able to start the bike but gas pours out of the carbs. I really do not wan to try and disassemble the carbs to clean them. I assume that the float is sticking. Any suggestions on how to clean the carbs well without removal??? yeah I know i should take them apart, but time and my old brain ain't up to it.... Thanks

Hi I recently purchased a YB 100 1987. Seems to use alot pf petrol, about 70 miles to a tank, uses very little 2 stroke. I have checked the air filter and it is very clean and a little oily, no sign of any splits around the intake. Checked the plug and is a bit black and sooty indicating a rich mixture. Thinking about investigating the carb, it looks like the cover has been removed many times in the past. Would like to have some advice on the carb, how do you know when it is worn, is it worth replacing, can you get reconditioned carbs, are the carb kits any good. In short I know very little about carburetters and I'm looking for help. Many Thanks Spike22

I have what I believe to be a 1964 model Y 20 Yamaha. It has a spot to mount a small 6 volt battery. But the is no wires there to hook one up. And I can not see were there used to be any wires that have been disconnected. It is in great condition, and everything looks very original. So I am baffled why no battery connections. Does any one know about these little bikes? Wiring diagram? How to ident exact year? Y20 864554

The seat length on my 1970 DT1c is about 22" . I have noticed that some of these models seem to have a shorter seat (maybe 18"). I like the looks of the shorter seat and I need to replace the cover and foam on my bike. Does anyone know if I can install a shorter seat on my bike, if the hinges are in the same place. If I stay with the 22 inch seat where can I buy a whole assembly.....any ideas?

I'm in the process of bringing a 1981 xj550h Maxim back from the almost dead. I hope someone out there has some YICS experince they'd be willing to share. This one has a huge vaccum/air leak by #4 carb. (it's really screwing with my freshly cleaned BS34 carbs) To properly repair this leak, I'd have to change the head gasket. Has anyone had any luck with any improper (High temp RTV) repairs on this type of leak? Is this a common failure on YICS motors? Lastly, does the YICS have a very great effect on the overall perforance of the bike? If this is a common failure and if I have to pull the head, I'm thinking of fixing this so this failure never occurs again. Or is there a …

  12. 1977 Yamaha XS360........ I know this is one of those stupid simple fixes, and I will probably kick myself for not knowing, but I will ask away as there is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to 2 wheels in my book. OK, I have adjusted and adjusted and adjusted my idle speed until the bike will stay running on its own. -+ 1300-1500 depending upon its mood. Oh by the way I cannot use the choke to warm up the bike as it dies every time. Bike runs great, power is smooth until I stop at stop sign at which it promptly dies every time unless I roll the throttle a bit. On another topic, I am still trying to find the magic spot on the clutch, but even…

  13. Afternoon Just signed up hoping you guys can help me with some advice about the R5 model. I'm looking at a 72 R5C which looks like a pretty original and straight bike but the owner tells me it's has a reed valve conversion (from the later RD I guess). Now I know my way round old Suzuki oil burners OK, but I'm new to the 70s Yams so I'd like to hear any opinions on this conversion - good thing? bad thing? doesn't matter thing? Also any general comments tips and hints on what to look for with an R5 would be welcome. Cheers - MaineKZ

Anyone ever do it? I have an old Kazuma ATV electric starter that sure looks like it would bolt right up..... What else beyond wiring issues and rigging a mount is required? I remember reading something about a starter chain or something to that effect once? Anybody either know the theory behind it, or better yet have an XS360/400 with electric start that would post up some pics of mounting of the starter and how it connects to the engine? -Bill

Hi guys me again!! So after all my euphoria at finally getting mt TR1 to run, I turned her off, went back to my manual to see what checks i should do, oil pressure etc, went to start her again and got the strangest noise i ever heard, the starter didnt seem to be able to spin the engine, then would huff it over half a turn then make a whiny noise again! I took off the left cover (i will drain the oil first next time!) and removed the starter, checked the brushes etc, and checked the starter gears and throw lever etc etc, all seemed in place and ok, re-fitted everything and nothing has changed except for now sometimes the starter just spins on its own, doesnt even engage…

hi all - soooo... the 77 xs400d that i picked up with less than 6k on the odo. is just about road ready. When i roll off of the throttle the engine sometimes wants to tach up to about 4000. Sometimes it will do this sitting still in nuetral after i have given it some gas. it will also do this on the road when i pull the clutch approaching an intersection. The only way i can get it to die down is by twisting out the idle adjustment screw on the carb. Then of course I have to twist it back the opposite way to keep it from dying on me. But then - sometimes i will pull up to a stop sign and the rpms will fall off as they should. What explains the eradic behavior? …

Any ideas all you amazing guys?? Thanks in advance Andy ps, does the virago exhaust fit the TR1 the 535 or the 920 maybe? struggling to find an exhaust for her
