yes I'd estimate about an inch on the front spacers so that would mean getting allen bolts longer that the original by the same amount, the rear looks a little longer? I sent a message to the chap who sold them originally to ask if he has any left, I doubt it though

so the little hole between the choke well and the bowl is clear then is it? if you fill the well with petrol...it passes through into the bowl?

that white smoke is no doubt just water vapour like all engines produce before they fully warm up, I'd investigate what blackhat said...further proof would be if it makes absolutely no difference switching the choke on or off when you do have it running?
