  1. I wouldnt recommend it as a be all and end all when carb cleaning no, but combined with carb cleaner and a compressed air line, it gives a more comprehensive result when carb cleaning, I really only answered this to say that carbs will not suffer from this approach at all, not to push it as a sole method of cleaning As far as the running of the engine goes; if that is your only concern, like you say Jim...Carb cleaner and compressed air is the way to go.
  2. Hello againn Tom, Its normal for your headlight to go dim when idling because its AC straight from the magneto. however the indicators, rear lights headlamp pilot lamp and instrument lamps are all off battery so they should work from the moment the key is switched on without the engine running. The reason the headlight dims when the indicators or brake light are activated is because there is no reserve of power for them out of the battery. I think the fact that the battery is trashed may have a great deal to do with the bulb blowing issues, the battery itself acts as a form of regulator as the voltage rises then more current will pass through the battery so in a way the battery is a load on the cct, but an open circuit or trashed battery is no load at all and so the voltage can rise to whatever the magneto is putting out at any given speed. the way to prove this theory is. disconnect the battery and measure between battery positive lead to chassis or battery negative lead, run the bike, hold at 5000rpm and note DC voltage. Then fit a good new battery and do the same measurement across battery terminals, hopefully you will see a reduced voltage this time.
  3. I dont know the bike particulars, but is there any bolts behind and to the rear of the side panels, remove them lift the back of the seat slightly and slide the seat back (Just a guess)

Sounds like thats what happened to me too (chain slipped), youre going to have to relieve the tensioner , undo the chain link and re-time as per workshop manual before re tensioning, like drewpy says...hopefully you were turning it over by hand or kickstart lever!
  5. Looking good Drewpy, you happy then? were the hubs done at the same time, and the spokes NOS or SS?
  6. Am I just a big girly?...Nope im using a pushbike for the 7 mile daily commute to work thats every day no matter how cold or snowy it is, and theres a big big hill involved too, after all I do live on the edge of the pennones and thats by choice, cause I do have a car sitting there on my drive doing nowt, just hate driving to work, so its 2 wheels all year for me Ive ridden motorbikes through many a winter in my time, but these days, once the grit salt hits the roads, thats it until spring time, the same reason as Goff says..it dont do your pride and joy any good and you can never clean it off properly, you wouldnt believe how fast salt removes zinc plated surfaces
  7. Ultrasonic cleaning will do no harm to your carbs, it is a completely non aggressive approach to cleaning and all it uses is a little warm water, a little washing liquid and ultrasinic waves that 'explode' the crud from the surface of the workpiece, It is a method used extensively for cleaning jewellery and dentures etc, i have used it on my carb and was pleased with the results, you may not need to use it yourself, thats your call but as Jim says, a carb cleaner aerosol and a compressed air line may be enough. heres mine that i did recently, I admit I went to town on it with polishing and tarting it up, but the ultrasonic was a good springboard for this (Not bad for 30 years old)

    HI

Hi Clivey, Its good to hear youve seen the error of your ways, Youve got some catchig up to do...Enjoy
  9. Youre right about riding the clutch, dont do it, you'll wear it out or cook it! The bike should be smooth and if it isnt , then perhaps the carbs may need to be balanced.
  10. I saw them last time round at Manchester Arena, great show, lots of stuff falling down, setting on fire, quite realistic, had us fooled for a while!
  11. All this circles stuff is right over my head, whats all that about then?
  12. Why not just select neutral, though im not sure it matters what gear is selected. It doesnt make any difference on my 175, but dont know if yours is the same i will admit, having said that, i would be surprised if its different as mines a 1978.

  14. Hello there, i'm not familiar with your bike, but theres useful info Here
  15. You say they are clear, but when its pissing down on the motorway and youre coming off at a junction, braking as well as indicating...cant be all that clear then!
  16. Sorry Shokz, the light looks fine, but not a fan of built in indicators, dont think they are legal, shouldnt be if they are IMO
  17. Rock on..(Tinitus rules )

that one must have been written by a woman then!!...
  19. Should'nt need it Mikey, it should be tight enough to stay put without adding extra sealant., when you do it lean your bike to the right so the oil runs away to the other side of the engine, it will save draining it

  21. If its owt like mine its just a seal in a recessed hole, if youre gonna have a go at replacing it you may be able to drill a small hole in it either side of the shaft, then screw some self tappers in and pull it out by pulling the screws. be careful if you try it as you only want to drill the seal, not the aluminium case behind it!!! Also you should wrap a layer of tape around the shaft splines when fitting a new one, this will protect the seal as you slide it over the shaft, its a possibility that yours is now leaking because this wasnt done.
  22. IIRC?? the mixture should be slightly rich at idle to enable smooth pick up when throttle opened, but not that rich it starts with a 2 degree ambient temperature without choke...With choke it will be very rich. As for a flooded endine, the reason for opening the throttle fully has more to do with expelling unburned fuel out of the exhaust that it does to actually start the engine, engines are difficut to start with wide open throttle.
