Does it have a vacuum operated fuel tap with a PRIME (PRI) position Olliver? if so you must use this position after running it dry, then you can swith back to ON

Beats me Alan could be the CDI but I wonder if you can find one cheaply to test? I would go with an ignition issue or perhaps carb diaphragms but havent got any experience of this so it's a bit of a guess really.

is your exhaust rotten and in holes?.. backfiring can be a symptom of this
