  2. i think the 50mpg figure would be closer with a motor in good shape
  3. then i am guessing you need a new ignition switch unless you can somehow clean the contacts...because the jumpering excercise just bypassed the switch and the associated wiring, you have stated the associated wiring and plugs are clean you could take an ohms reading of it all, take out the fuse and measure between the fuse holder clip (loom side) and the brown connector on the relay, it should be a very low reading 0.5 ohms at a guess
  4. i think the 20mpg ones have leaking gas tanks !
  5. me too mate but i was just answering the question as asked
  6. you had me confused saying its a 1980 bike, these did have the square sect swing arms as i thought..its a 1979 model thats why the oil tank is on the left...someone fitted a later arm

  10. yes there are several ways of checking one is to drain the oil remove the engine take off the two engine cases chock up the engine on blocks until the cylinder base gasket face is approimately level (preferably in a tray) fill the crankcase with diesel and watch the two sides checking for weepage how does that sound?
  11. you sure the oil tank is on the left i dont see it? 1980 should be on right shouldnt it?
  12. thats why i asked you cant just nip these nuts up you have to get a good hold of the rotor and tighten them to the recommended torque...and thats pretty damned tight. if they come loose and the rotor also comes loose you will damege the woodruff key and possibly the recess it sits in and also risk damaging the magneto coils themselves due to heat generated through friction caused by the rotor rubbing the iron cores....hope not! I think you should investigate this area now and not strip that motor fully again unless you are sure about big end play!...how are you judging this 'play' ?
  13. I doubt it isnt the original one Different swing arm different shock absorber different chainguard what side is the oil tank on? what is the vin number?
  14. Rubber? aghh i'm out of my depth here, usually they are heat proof aluminium / fiber jobbies

  17. how about an intro in new members forum? cheers
  18. you need to release the spring tension (take care) Then up end and drain the oil out then remove the allen headed screw at the bottom and pull out the stantion, then the seals can be removed. Take care not to damage / dent the top of the slider when removing the seal. All just a guess, this is how my old bike is......
  19. so then...it is working with the jumper and not without it...is this correct
