The gaskets crush as they seal so they should technically be rellaced with each re fit, although i must admit i've re used them before though i do not recommend it, like you say they are cheap so keep a few in stock. As for paint, I have already said about my opinions, if you want to pay more or if you dont have a Wilkinsons, then buy from Halfords or the like
  2. Not up to speed on these ultra modern engines, but dont they have plated or coated bores? if so it could be a bit of plating that has gone awry, i suggest you find out if this is so and then take it from there. see this for example Here

Dunno mate, but lets find out what you have first...what's the engine number?, we'll get it sorted in the end no doubt try to be patient. Also it will say the engine displacement in the casting of the barrel, it will say 171cc or i think 123cc

So this is it! its a DT175MX like mine, so long as the engine number begins with 2K4

You could try Jenolite, its and acid based rust remover, follow the instructions and recautions properly, its not compusary though, you could just rub it down or even use one of those dremel gadgets or the cheap but good alternatives that Aldi sell from time to time, you wont do much damage, dont think that you'll wear it away, dont try to get every mark off, it will still look good painted Dont forget you will need to buy a new exhaust gasket and replace the old one each time you re fit the pipe

Some bikes, almost all later than the 70's, have a side stand switch, this will stop the spark if put in gear with the stand down, I dont think you have that problem as you have seen it sparking A CDI is a 'Capacitor Discharge Ignition' its what the old points systems were replaced with, its an electronic black box gadget and either works or does'nt, your does...you have a spark

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ +1 Yep, remove the exhaust starting with the tail pipe, rub it down yourself to the standard that youre happy with, then clean it all off with a rag dosed in white spirit, and hang it up and allow to dry off (white spirit) before spraying, wear latex or similar surgical gloves to keep the oils from your skin away from the surface.

Are you not getting any attempt at all to fire, Im not familiar with your bike though, is it a kick start only, air cooled or water cooled? As far as i know , if you are getting a spark??? then the cut of switch must be OK, usually the cut off switches earth out the LT signal to the coil on these bikes, so you wouldnt get a spark if it was faulty. One thing to add here though is to check the side stand switch is either working properly or is by passed properly with nice clean connections.

If you are getting a spark, I would buy a new plug and drain and replace the fuel, also drain the fuel in the carb, then try again, maybe with a bump start if thats possible.

The problem with DT's is they are designed as an off road bike and so have a high front mudguard, this gives the bike the right look but does absolutely no favours to the hot exhaust that is getting sprayed with cold water, the net effact of all this is a steady rust buidd up starting at the downpipe and working steadily towards the expansion chamber. The only answer is a regular wipe down to keep it clean and I'm afraid, regular removal of the pipe for a qiick touch up spray. I recommend using Plasti-Kote barbecue paint available from Wilkinsons stores, because it looks good, stands the heat well and is far cheaper than paints that are sold for motor vehicles. But like I said it wont last, none of them do...so look to keeping on top of it. Here is my bike, painted with said product, you can see clearly how vulnerable the front of the exhaust is.

Two elderly pensioners who have been married for 60 years are reminiscing about when they met each other when the old dear says “do you remember when we made love against that fence on my 18th birthday? Yes says the old man “do you fancy doing it again for old times sake? I think the fence is still there, lets give it a try. Meanwhile a policeman overhears the conversation and thinks “I have got to see this, and I will make sure the old couple come to no harm, so he follows them and watches the old lady drops her skirt and suddenly they are going at it hammer and tongs with incredible furious sex which goes on for ages until they both drop to the floor exhausted, the policeman walks over to make sure they are alright and says to the old man that was amazing for your age you must have had one hell of a sex life! Not really says the old man, 60 years ago that fence wasn’t electrified.

So Steve youve got positive and negative reactions in equal measure, time will tell. The thing that concerned me most with it were I dont think I have a logbook for it but will update the listing should I find it. The front forks are pitted. The spares you need may be very difficult to find, its easy to say yeah, good on you and go for it, but you are looking to be able to ride that bike very soon, not have it in the garage as a labour of love, many of us could live with that situation as we have several modes of transport to choose from, but you dont. Whatever you do you know we will do our best to help, even if we know nowt about Jawas

Shit Steve, I cant believe you did that Its a money pit, dont do it!!
