ok, threw a drive chain and i think i killed third gear and maybe second. sounds like clacking when i put it into third. but was able to ride home fifty miles just by passing 2 and 3 gear. ok my question for you all is: can you split the cases without having to take apart the cylinders and head? yank the motor flip it and split cases apart just to get at the trans gears... Anyone who actually has a XJ550 1981 know if this is possible.
  11. its a 1981 model NOT a "II" model. i looked at the fiche last night and i didn't see any bolts under the jugs. i also looked at the manual, it doesn't mention any bolts under the jugs....

1978 SR500 13,500miles I'll be posting pictures and the Ebay listing # tomorrow. My knee can no longer take the kicking of a high compression single. My XS400 is fine but the SR500 has to go. dual disc progressive springs up front new rear shocks uni filter good tires super trapp good seat and plastics tank has a dent, but I'm probably going to include the extra tank i have that needs to be welded. chrome is in good shape had the stator rewound at RM stator in Canada last month new wiring harness new cdi good chain and sprockets key works ignition, tank ,side cover, no helmet lock.

toss 'em. get new ones. you would want a repair compound going in to the combustion chamber.
  21. socalyamaha replied to pbaszxs400's post in a topic in Classics

well, heres what i'm trying to figure out. i know MC companies send there bikes out in to the world running lean. so my question to you all is: should i stick with 38mm carbs and increase the jet size? or buy a brand new set of 36mm Mikuni's?
  23. socalyamaha replied to socalyamaha's post in a topic in Classics
yeah i know. but i'm not going to buy the dellorto set he has at those prices. i'm trying to find out if i should buy a 34 36 38 set of mikuni's i've been buying from them for two years for parts on my 78 SR500.
