I found the problem. Taking the housing off I found the gear that engages the starter was worn and missing some parts. Some call it a starting gear or a jack gear. It uses a chain type belt to turn the engine over. Repaired that and problem solved.

The starter is just spinning. It's not turning the motor.

Can someone please help me? I put a new starter in my virago and it won't start. The starter is brand new and I can here it turn but it won't start? Any suggestions?

Is my battery not giving enough power to engage it? It does spin.

My starter is new and works. For some reason it not coming in contact with the teeth in the engine to turn it over. Do I some how need to shim the starter or something to make it work. Please help, this motorcycle doesn't have the grinding problem. I need a virago expert.

Maybe not that wide. I was just wondering if anyone had heard or knew anyone that had done it, thanks.

I have a 1983 Virago 500. I would like to give it more of a chopper look. Any ideas?
