  1. sounds like starter selonoid, you could try shorting the connections with a screwdriver and if this operates the starter it will either be a bad connection or a new selonoid is required.
  2. Possible binding brakes, or with the engine change did you change the sprocket set as or are they the same.Different sizes of chain sproket will give different performance characteristics.

A friend had a similar problem on a GSX 600 and it turned out to be wheel balance.

Hi Just checked my 1982 XJ650 and it has about an inch clearance for the rear wheel on the centre stand, also shocker length is 335mm. My 1989 XJ600 is almost touching the floor on centre stand but it has wear on the mountingpoints (holes got longer) so it rocks slightly when touched, will need welding to correct it. Hope it helps Dave C

Have a look at stuff from around the same year, like xj600, fz600 or even RD350. A lot of the stuff is the same, like master cylinders and brake levers and switches. You just never know what will fit, i recently picked up a brand new motad for a Suzuki GS650 and it fit straight on to my 89 XJ600 (i was taking a chance but i could have always resold it if it didnt fit) Hope it helps u out.

Hi Got a daft question that i should no the answer to, but slight doubt better to ask. Ok then, putting a XJ600 (pre divi) back together and have just started repairing and fitting the loom, got to the battery and just not sure where the black cable from the top of the starter connects to (i think - terminal on battery). Also the earth strap from rear of engine, it has a smaller black wire coming from it ( i think - terminal on battery and the smaller one to the frame). Would i be right or have i got all confused, any help welcome. Thanks Dave C
