I should hold onto any bits you take off so that when the police take your bike off the road you will be able to put it back to standard. If you want to go faster, loose weight!

I didn't think that was possible but as they say, someone will do it. You need to check out each individual electrical system on the bike. Start with the charging system and if this is still working, you are very lucky. You should see about 14 volts above idle speed. Next is the ignition system, if the bike starts up, your laughing. Then after all of that, everything else that I can think of should be OK as it is not affected by polarity. While your having a sortout, check the bikes earth (ground) and ensure that it is good. You do not state the year but I suspect that it doesn't have any fueling computers. If it has, then start looking for second hand parts.

Is this a new or rediscovered language?
  5. Take the tank off the bike and have it steamed out. This should remove any loose scale and rust. Do not put old fuel in petrol tanks as the fuel is hydroscopic. Make sure that the tank top seals are in good condition and not letting water in. Seal them with waterproof sealant. Fit a fuel filter after the petcock.

Why dont you have a seat made for both of you? It would make sense for long journeys. In general I have found that Yamaha seats to be slightly more comfortable than other makes!

Seems like pulling in the lever does not fully disenguage the clutch and is therfore causing drag. It also could be that all of the clutch cable and linkage requires lubricating and adjusting. Further, It is possible that the internal clutch mechanism is damaged or the clutch has now worn out. You will have to check it out step by step. Keep us informed.

Sounds a bit dodgey to me. Does it happen on one piece of road or any road? Have you checked the tyre (tire) for bulges or damage? Has the front wheel been fitted properly and is tight and bearings OK? Are the steering head bearings OK? Has the wheel been properly balenced and are the weights still on the wheel? Does the bike start to weave when the vibration starts? Is the front wheel out of round? Let us know what happens.

Put new spark plugs in it and new Ht leads. This should cure the problem. Check the timing on both cylinders and balance the carbs. Ensure that the throttle slide is opening both butterflys to let air in. Let us know what happens.

Go to Orwells and practice in their car park. Then you can have a coffee or a cold drink inside. You riding problem will disappear with practice.

It could be a problem with too little electrical power at idle. This will reduce the spark voltage causing misfire. At higher rpms there will be enough power to run the bike. You need to check the voltages in the manual against what you get on the bike. Simple changes such as the spark plugs, battery, and renewing the bikes ground (earth) to ensure full charging would be a way forward. Let us know what you find.

If there is even the slightest hint of a failure of the bikes chassis, wheels or external transmission/suspension, there must be a product recall to inspect those parts. Once the inspection of as many units as possible has taken place then further recall is required to update the fix for the problem. This is not overkill. It is a fundamental safety and quality control function that any good company must have inplace to ensure the fitness of its products. Apart from Yamaha, other manufactures have problems with their products. Honda, Pan Euro high speed instability. Buell, BMW and Kawasaki frames breaking. Susuki Hayabusa castings breaking. The list will aways grow longer but with good quality corrective action, no one will have an accident caused by company neglect.

Sounds like you have an air leak into the induction system. This is causing the engine to run weak and badley but run fine with the choke open, enriching the fuel ratio. Remove the carb and check all of the seals and mountings for cracks or splits. When re-assembling use a light grease to make the joint seals better.

Before you re-assemble the plug and wiring, you should take a look at what caused the failure in the first place. it has failed under heavy load which means that another component is drawing too much current. Dont risk a fire.
