  1. You should see 14 volts +, when the engine is running above idle. If not the battery is being discharged by the lights.

With the lower compression on the left side, the chances are that it is burning a little bit of oil. Piston ring wear, oil in barrel, burnt on plug. Things can't be far out because it runs OK, so just needs tickling up.
  3. Switzerland and back? Why do you want to bring it back?

Stop it you two! There is bound to be some torque reaction to the throttle movement-naturally. Is that the case? You should not be at low revs and low speed as you must be in the wrong gear.

Amanda you naughty girl! Suffolk has hills and is the blue sky county. I have been to the highest place in Suffolk, the home of a Harley rider and on his house wall is a scribed line denoting the 1000 foot mark (asl). Also it is the land of watermills, woods with aliens, good beer and docks. Suffolk has been invaded by Americans, Romans, Germans (ww2) now Lithuainians, Estonians and what-have-you. Now what more could a girly want?

if it's running rich the optimum engine temperature will take a long time to reach. Aside from that, it is possible that the engine coolent thermostat is stuck open also causing the same effect. The two could be tied together in that the fuel system sensor is keeping it rich, due to the coolent temperature. So, start with the thermostat and ensure that this is working. Also the low idle speed when cold could be caused by being super rich.

You forgot to warn Orwells that you were in the area.
  8. No I'm not sure but if a new battery cannot turn over a motor then I'd be looking at the starter.

I sit here looking and knowing that I'm missing out. My uncle lost his farm when Mount St Helens went up. Now completely buried. Has anyone else got good pics like these of their journeys?
  10. I think your starter motor has had it.

Gamin make one for BMW with a mount. Otherwise it's Bluetac I'm afraid!! Are you sure you want a satnav for your bike? It'll take you down motorways!

I think you mean that the clutch does not disengage when the lever is pulled. If you have overhauled the clutch then you have left something out when reassembling it. The cable pulls on a lever that presses in and releases the plates against the springs. So if it is not releasing there is something missing. This could mean that that the actuating mechanism has wiorn out and therefore cannot activate the clutch. It could also be that the cable is too long and therefore not pulling the lever mechanism enough. You will have to check the cable then take the cover off and see whats happening inside.

You should find up to date information on the suitability of certain tyres on the Motorcycle News website (motorcyclenews.com) as they did a whole special issue on the subject.

Both the R1 and R6 are well handling bikes. I don't understand your question about the 600 or 650 being fastest.

As you get older, you get wiser. Get a bigger, better bike to go faster and be able to stop.

chrisw, I have noted your conclusions about the R1 and the comparison to the R6. The 07, R1 has a reduced frame rigidity compared to earlier models, (for reasons I cannot fathom and I don't think Yamaha are right on this) which might explain it's lack of handling. For this reason the R1 does not seem to have purpose. It does not handle as well, it's not a tourer and it doesn't cafe race. When dealing with loaded structures, I was taught that to control the actions of the subassemblies the basic structure requires to be ridged. That allows for other components to work acccordingly ie the rear susphension and swing arm. Hanging the front forks off a twisting frame does not seem logical to me as the loading on the steering head is enormous under heavy braking and cornering. How are the forks supposed to be used if the structure is doing some of the work for them? So perhaps the R1 is there and is going somewhere but in which direction, who knows.

You need to be more objective about the vibration. Does it always happen on the same road or route? Is it with the same pasenger? Have you checked the balence of your wheels? Have you forgotten to fully service your front forks? Have your steering head bearings failed? Is the rear wheel in line? Is the front disc warped? Are you using more rpm than normal? Are the rear bearings worn? Are the swing arm bearings worn? Have you fully checked your tires (tyres) for wear or blisters? All these and other questions YOU will have to answer.

If you feel competant enough to use your own bikes, do so but just remember that the engine on a new bike needs to get hot. Therefore should be run for a length of time when started. Stop/starting new engines is a no no.
