So, on further reflection, I think I have come to the conclusion that the oil had migrated to the engine from the frame tank and has blown up though the crankcase breather to the air filter. The filter is soaked in oil. I guess it has then run down over the exhaust and is dripping from the bottom of the collector box.

I have recently acquired a 1985 sr500. It has sat idle for around 12 years and whilst it starts, it doesn’t run so a carb clean is required. However, whilst sat at idle I have noticed an oil leak in the vicinity of the collector box(?) on the exhaust. It could be from above this but not sure. What I am looking for is a diagram showing the engine/ exhaust (exploded or perhaps workshop diagram) that I can use to identify parts and problem areas as I am new to bikes. I also need a reliable source for spares, the bike is an import on a 2J2 frame number that the local Yamaha dealer has failed to identify. many thanks in advance. Richard
