Hi mate, i was on a similar mission for an XS 250 I picked up.. I managed to get a service manual for mine, and it said that the the first 3 characters of the frame number indicate the year.. This site has a list of them all.. http://www.dropbears.com/m/models/yamaha/modelcodes.htm There looks to be a couple of possibilities for your bike.. I hope it helps..

Hi all.. my first post here.. I picked up an old XS 250 and have made a start at getting it tarted up and roadworthy again.. I'm searched the net and this forum to see if I can work out what year the bike is from the engine or frame numbers.. The frame number is 2U3=011649 and the engine number is 1M0-011649 I have a service manual for it, which confirms that it is an XS 250 engine. If anyone can help i'd really appreciate it.. (as soon as i figure out how to add a picture I'll put a couple on .. cheers,,)
