  1. I hear what you say but ( sorry if that sounds dismissive ) it's about 7-8mm ! I was going to pull the spare engine apart today but haven't moved my arse out of the house yet and I have the Fazer to check over and clean yet. As soon as I can I'll have to pull both engines apart and I'll update anyone that's reading this ( if they should care, haha !) I first thought someone had put a different year crank in but Cynic sounds adamant they should be all the same ( which makes total sense ) thanks both of you for helping a DT newbie.
  2. Thanks for the photos Blackhat, mine was assembled correctly but because the crank bit that the pinion sits on ( slides over) is longer someone has fitted a 5mm spacer so that it tightens, then ground down so that the clutch cover fits! I'm guessing whoever rebuilt the crank didn't press this end in far enough! Is this even possible ? I wanted it on the road but looks like I'll have to strip the spare and check if that one is fit to use or have it re-conditioned, I just daren't run it as is cos if the nut lets go the damage will be sickening ! Thanks again, Dave
  3. Well that's definitely answered my question ! They should be the same length ! It doesn't appear to be an earlier crank cos they seem to have slotted / keyed primary gear. I don't think it's a spacer issue cos the primary drive gears are different designs too, one of them is recessed ! If you ignore the threaded bit , where the woodruff key fits, that bit protrudes further, maybe it's not fully in the flywheel, ah, now if that's possible then I'll have to strip it, bugger ! The crank is already installed as I only removed the clutch cover to blank off the oil pump but now if I can't be sure it will be safe, hey ho, thanks for the help.
  4. That looks right, but that's only half, the non brake side are about 240 mm !
  5. Hi Cynic, so that the side casing goes on ! The primary drive pinion (gear) has been fitted, then the nut, no washer! Then ground down a bit! It's definitely been ground because the grind marks line up on the nut and crank end perfectly. There are also spinning marks inside the casing where the crank end touches. I don't want to put it back together without a spring washer, maybe thread lock might be enough but I'm confused about the crank length, just doesn't make sense. Dave
  6. I have 2 x 2k4 engines, the crank in the one in the bike has been shortened to fit ( clutch side casing ) the other one looks right! But, the one in the bike doesn't have room for a spring washer! Any advice / knowledge welcome,
  7. Thanks, that's where I saw both parts together, I hadn't realised that I needed both! I'll get one ordered. Thanks
  8. Mine doesn't have one and before I put it on the road I need to fit one, but there seems to be two choices! There is a rubber one, or a nylon one which looks more robust ( obviously ) which is it please and where from ? ps. I've just found a picture of a nylon one with what looks like a rubber sleeve! Is that why eBay shows two types ?
  9. Oh ! Thanks for that. I'll check before I get excited. OK, removed the shock ( box section arm) and its half inch shorter than the spare.( different bottom end!) The spring is 3/8" shorter than the spare, so, I can put the spare spring on and gain a little bit or ( shorten) cut the spare shock bottom tube and it might just fit ! Thanks, it looks like a plan, cheers, Dave
  10. Thanks for the tip, I've got a spare shock with the screw thread type preload ( rather than stepped) so I'll wind it up full and then decide if it's enough. sorry Blackhat, I'm out watching some local bands tonight, that'll be a sight.
  11. Yeah, good idea, I used it on all things years ago , I'll go shopping later, thanks for the reminder.
  12. I'm sure you'll all had this problem so here goes, I've ground / wire brushed the old rust the best I can but can I treat them with kurust or something ? I can't risk the inner tube sticking to paint so wondered if there's an accepted method, Dave
  13. Sorry, forgot to log in!
  14. Hi everyone, well, I've had Honda's, SS50, rubbish, CBs200,3x250,550,750, Suzy's GTs125,185,500, GS750. OK I'm bored now! The gist is, like you I've had loads of bikes, and now I find myself buying a DT175,why? Well I've never had one but always admired them. And it fits in the motorhome! Just. So far I'm just checking and improving things as I go, main problem? Carrying me and the wife on a spindly spring mono shock , hopefully there's a mod ? Dave( West Yorkshire)
  15. Glad I didn't try junking the airbox, I would have noticed the battery swinging in the breeze, wouldn't I ? Thanks, I'm off to the new members section ! Dave
  16. Hi everyone, never had a DT before but still love 2 strokes after finding my way back, So, as it says really, I'd like to fit a pod type filter and maybe lift the needle a notch, or am I wasting my time? I have the air box but no filter in at the 'mo ! ( just bought it ). Thanks, Dave
