DT cold start difficulties
When I start my 1980 DT175MX (F) every now and then, it really takes a while to get it starting and idling normally. So I kickstart it after pulling out the chock, and kick it like no tomorrow and still feels reluctant to start. After a dozen kicks or so, it finally starts and idles for a few seconds then dies. This happens about twice, and by the time all this has happened the engine is pretty warm and can start with choke but then I'm able to push the choke back in and give it a few throttle blips to keep it running, after then it idles fine and quite smoothly. This has been happening since I got it. But it pays off since when its warm, its a wild torque beast So any help or advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance

Thanks for your help Slice, unfortunately I don't have the tools to perform the turn at the moment so it will take me a while until I find my neighbor that has way more tools than me.

Thanks for your reply. Does clutch dragging have a link to clutch adjustment or is it some other problem to do with the clutch?

1980 electrical question
As some of you guys know, I have got a '79/80 Yamaha DT175MX. I read somewhere here on YOC on a DT question that when neutral is enabled both the neutral and oil should light up, but I'm not sure if that also applies to the 70's and 80's ones? I'm asking cause my oil light does not light up when in neutral and neither when the oil seems look in the oil reservoir. and oh btw, my DT has difficulties sometimes when trying to engage either neutral or first gear, what could be the problem? Thanks in advance p.s sorry for the vague title

Rotten exhaust...solution?
Basically I can see smoke leaking out in the first 8 cm of the exhaust system from the exhaust port side. I hope this makes more sense?

Rotten exhaust...solution?
Everyday I get to know my DT175 MX more and more, and today as I was reving it high up since the few start up it wants to get reved high up or else it would die so that's another problem I'm facing but now back to the exhaust point, I saw smoke from the bottom of the bike, for a moment I thought it was the engine, but I'm pretty sure its from the bottom of the exhaust what looks like a leak. I can't find a donor bike especially in Greece, these DT's rare come up for sale. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

dt 50 wont go over 20mph
I'm also new here, but why not give it a compression on dry and wet, and post the numbers, I'm sure someone on here can identify something regarding your problem. From what I know a 50cc is capable of reaching 45 mph.

High octane and 2 stroke!
I'm assuming its for the American market since the frame code isn't 2A7 (MX). Mine has code 3G6

High octane and 2 stroke!
I guess I shall just stay with the normal 95, not that its any bad in the first place, just thought the 100 would be better but gladly mistaken. Thank though.

High octane and 2 stroke!
As we all know the the debate about high octane and 2 stroke barely ends. So my question will basically go around this topic but not go indepth. So, recently I purchased a 1980 Yamaha DT175F (MX) and due to the fact that I'm lately busy, I just kick start it on weekends for a few mins then turn it off. So I was thinking of getting 3 or 4 gallons 100 octane and since my local shell gas station has got an offer on 100 octane for a while now so I wouldn't pay a alot more for the normal 95 octane. The reason for me wanting to get some litres of 100 octane is that it stays fresh for a longer time inside the tank rather than both affecting the fuel it self and the tank when normal fuel is used. What worries me is that I read on some site that 100 octane fuel can literally melt components of my engine. I would like your opinion fellas! Thanks in advance

'70 - '80 DT175 owners advice on the bike and any recommended modifications?
I agree with Airhead about the brakes. But since Cynic mentioned horsepower, does the DT175 really produce 22 horsepower? If yes does anyone have any torque figures also for the DT?

'70 - '80 DT175 owners advice on the bike and any recommended modifications?
Engine swap can be a good idea, but not really worth spending the money and time, not because the DT is a bad frame nor cause the RD has a bad engine, but cause who would compromise the agileness and nimbleness of a DT Its like changing the purpose of the DT which is being a dual sport.

Difference between DT175MX & DT175F? Both same year model '79/'80
Thanks, this is so much clear in my mind. It's amazing how a 30+ year old bike has the same concept as cars nowadays that include the battery run system (Hybrid),

Difference between DT175MX & DT175F? Both same year model '79/'80
Thank you for the PM, much appreciated! Not sure If I understand correctly about the CDI/Magneto. But is the ignition made up of CDI & Magneto, or is one of either? Just want this point explained please.

Difference between DT175MX & DT175F? Both same year model '79/'80
@DirtyDT, not sure If I was clear, I meant that it doesn't have double shocks in the rear.

Difference between DT175MX & DT175F? Both same year model '79/'80
Thanks to this forum and its members, I recently got to know that my '79/'80 DT175 was a DT175F and not a DT175MX since the frame and engine didn't not carry the 2A7-XXXXXX code. And btw mine has got a monoshock rear suspension. I would like to know the difference between the MX & the F, and how can I tell if mine has got CDI or magneto suspension? Wasn't sure if I should post this topic here, workshop or classics section, so barely with me until I get used to feeling like home Thanks in advance!

Yamaha DT175 question with photos of my bike.
Hello guys, recently I have purchased a 1980 Yamaha DT175. So I wanted everything to be legit interms of maintaince and ownership so I downloaded the owners manual. As I was reading through I reached the page that mentioned the 'Machine Identification'. So since I'm pretty sure my bike is a DT175, the manual says to check the serial which is stamped on the right hand side of the headstock assembly which is also the same number on the engine. So if its a DT175 it should start with 2A7-XXXXXX and if its a DT125 it starts with 2A6-XXXXXX. So I went and checked my bike for the codes. Neither the frame nor the engine showed a code close to what is listed in the manual. Code on engine and frame is: 3G6-004181 but code on exhaust shows: 2A6-14610 Please help me with whats happening here! And oh, photos do appear when I insert them here but after I post this topic they disappear, anyone knows why? Thanks in advance!

Hello fellow Yamaha riders! I'm new here.
Hello mates! How are y'all? I'm a 17 year old high school student that has recently bought a 1980 Yamaha DT175 (not sure if its a MX). I'm currently in year 12 and got another year in year 13 since I'm doing the british A level system. I'm a big car and engine guy and while this I'm also a bike person. I hope we get on together since in the end we're one community. This is my bike:
