Hi I have just acquired a US import RD250 1974, a few questions if you don't mind.. 1) what oil do I put in the oil tank for the two stroke mix? and I don't know what is in there at present(it's a pale yellow colour) so can it be mixed with another type? 2) What are those 3 small tubes coming from the carb area that are not attached to anything at the other end? 3)When looking on ebay for bits there seems to be a lot of models listed for various parts (RD250A/B/C DX etc) are many of the parts for say RD250 73-79 similar or will stuff only fit a certain model? My frame number starts 352 so it looks like an RD250DXpro, whatever that means 4)Are there different front mudguards for the various air cooled RD's? I could do with a new one as mine is dented and scratched and would probably cost more to fix and re-chrome than a new one. I have seen a couple of pattern ones on ebay that are listed for my year but my guard has struts front and rear of the guard that bolt on the bottom of fork legs yet the ones for sale only attach with a central bracket at the top of the leg?? 5)I bought the bike knowing that the front brake was not working. The fluid reservoir lid was stuck fast but I finally shifted it with a large pair of grips only to find it full of brown lumpy gunk similar to a jar of curry paste!!! what is this?? and do you think a good clean out right down to the calliper could sort it out? 6) On left full lock the handlebars hit the tank and have made a dent, to stop this is it just a matter of undoing the screw on that thing on the lower yoke and turning it round a bit? Sorry for the dumb questions but I have never owned one of these before and my other bike and previous bikes I have owned all had cable operated drum brakes, cos I am old you see!! Thanks Paul

Hi Does anyone know any insurance companies who will insure an unregistered bike on frame number alone? Problems I am having.. 1) Most insurers won't.. full stop.. 2) Footman James won't insure as I do not keep it in a locked garage overnight. 3) Carole Nash will without a garage but all the D.V.L.A stuff has to be completed and a new reg number has to be provided within 30 days or the policy is cancelled and I will be charged the relevant fees for this.. The only way to avoid this is to have it in a garage and they can provide "storage insurance" until the bike is registered. Does anyone know how long the D.V.L.A takes do do such things given they have all the correct docs Also.. to add.. the bike needs some work so cannot be M.O.t'd yet and probably won't be until spring next year so because of the above issues it will be uninsured and outside (albeit shackled to the wall) unless anyone has an answer?? Sorry, finally to add... can you ride an insured bike (insured on frame number) to a MOT test station(pre-booked) with no tax, no registration and no number plate?? can't seem to find a definite answer on this as some say yes and others say no..maybe I will just ring the cops Thanks Paul

Hi I am later re-starter!!! at 60. I passed my bike test in 1971, had cars all the time since 1972 and 40 years later got a bike again. So I am new here too, restored a 1960 AJS 350 (Brit bike) over the last 18 moths or so (gearbox is out at the moment) but I have just bought a 1974 RD250(need to get used to that LH gear change as old brit bikes are RH change!!!) Strange, even after 40 years I just got on the bike( the AJS) and rode it like I had never been off it?? The Yam should be here soon!!!Anyway, best of luck with your project, post some pics when you are ready.. Paul

Thanks for the tips, My Bantam was a 1968 (F) D10 175cc just before the D14/4 came out, like lots of things in hindsight, I should have kept it... A trident was sold on Ebay recently, think it went for just under 5K but I have seen them go for a lot more than that. Paul

Don't reckon I could pass it now!!! + it's mega bucks, my first bike a two year old BSA bantam cost me £80 and then my brand new Honda CD175 in 1971 cost £220 mind you I was only earning £10 a week s'pose it's all relative, sold that in 1972 when I passed my car test (that was a LOT more difficult, they were still really tough even back then) and bought an old ford Prefect for a tenner!! ha ha !! When I passed my test in 1971 you could have ridden a 250, any 250!!! on L plates and without a helmet!!! no CBT, and with no riding experience apart from what you gained falling off round the block!!! Just apply for a 6 month provisional (and you could have as many of those as you liked) And, when you did have a test, that was a joke as well!!! Paul
