  1. Postin this pic for Flip! I think I need to rotate the intake cam (on the right) one more tooth clockwise - does that look right to you? I've been fucking with them back and forth and I think I've almost got it....'cept I'm off by one small turn I think. (at TDC)
  2. If you tried that here you'd be chasing down 1 out of every 10 cars... but then again it's not illegal here. Also there's a difference between reflective and refractive light, HIDs in reflective lenses are fine....they still shine the light where it's supposed to go, refractive lenses are just dicks and bounce the light everywhere. HIDs in fog lights are horrible as well since they shoot the light everywhere. Also if I saw anyone fucking with my truck they'd have broken things themselves... ALSO, HIDs in projectors blind you quite a bit if they're either aimed incorrectly, or going over a hill... yet somehow I haven't smashed because of lights. There are bigger things to worry about than smashing peoples headlights because YOU think they're too bright. And the HID subject has been beaten to death....so that's all I'm going to say about that!
  3. You know... I think the intake cam is positioned incorrectly now that I went and looked at it again...damn! Gotta to take the tensioners off and rotate that bitch....ah well. Better to notice now!
  4. Haha yes you did! I knew there was a small chance of you actually having some time to come and help so I had a feeling I was going to get my hands nice and dirty on this build! Not a bad thing at all... was just nervous about screwing something up! It is harder when you don't have the right tools...and the wife keeps asking "What else did you buy...what else do you need....what was $50 now at Canadian Tire..." LOL I have turned the engine over by hand a few times already to make sure there was nothing binding, I'll be sure to double check my marks and position of the camshafts. I'm not sure how to check valve clearance... gonna need some youtube help (or your help!) on this one! And it's not party time yet.... once I get it back in and it actually fires up then we can celebrate!! lol Well...when the snow melts, then we can celebrate... haha
  5. Another late night, and now the only thing left to do is a valve measurement and adjustment if needed, and then it's back in the bike she goes!
  6. Oh shit... I think I've actually got all of the hard work done now! Camshafts are lubed up and installed and everything went nice and smooth...even had my marks to work from off the chain so the spacing is identical from when I took it apart. Sweet!
  7. If you lived here you could use outside as a fridge! Actually it'd be a deep freeze right now.... Just call your dealer and give em the #, they should be able to tell you what year.
  8. Woo! Got em all in, job got a little easier as I did each one...but they were still very finicky! A pair of tweezers would have came in handy...ahhh...shit, I just remembered I had medical forceps that would have been perfect!! Damnit...oh well, it's already done! Took my time and started putting everything back together today after I picked up my last $5 rubber grommet from Yamaha today. Torqued the head down with no problems to the specified 16.5ft/lbs, and had no problems with my newly threaded stud hole! Wooooo! Now I just need to mount the cams and finish up the top end. I'm going to use the cams from the donor engine because they should be a better fit. Will check gap to be sure once they're mounted up.
  9. Ok...that worked. 10 minutes to do one frickin clip though lol what a bitch these are!! One down...7 to go. Guess I should be thankful I only have two valves per cylinder!
  10. Hmmm maybe I will make one then....lol http://www.d-series.org/forums/diy-forum/154570-valve-spring-compressor-0-a.html
  11. Princess Auto has this one: http://www.princessauto.com/pal/en/Engine-And-Transmission/Valve-Spring-Compressor/8003725.p probably going to pick it up. It's $50 - what the shop would probably charge to do the job and I'd rather do it myself if I can!
  12. Tried for the last half hour to get the valve retainers into place with no luck, think I'm going to have to break down and buy the valve spring compressor....
  13. Got the cylinder housings on, made a ring compressor out of an aluminum pop can and a big hose clamp for the two inside pistons and once they were in I was able to get the outside two to slide in just using my fingers to compress the rings into the cylinders. Wooo! One step closer!
  14. What about tinting a strip at the top of a clear visor? Is that legal? Then if bright headlights are coming...you can just lean your head down a bit so the light is in the tinted part....
  15. That's how I'm going to look as soon as I start it up when it's back in the bike!
  16. Thanks for the tips! I'm re-using the rings that came out of the parts engine, so they're not BRAND new at least, that should make it a little easier. Thanks! Making some progress....went and picked up a torque wrench this morning actually, knew I was going to need one for reassembly. I've already moved from the dirty garage to the clean basement and created my reassembly area. Got the pistons on the connecting rods and have my rings all lined up according to the specs in the manual, so that no gap is in the same spot.
  17. Thanks buddy!! And oh man... it's time to start putting it all back together now... I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little nervous about the potential outcome, I just hope everything goes super smooth, and I don't miss anything on the way. I took enough pictures and studied them, and got enough help from you guys along the way so I should be able to do this....but still, it's my first time. We were all nervous our first time.... lol
  18. Brighter headlight, or you need glasses. I can see just fine on back country roads here with no lighting when other cars are coming at me. I tend to look down to the right shoulder as well - follow the painted line - it helps to not kill your night vision, if you'll looking right at the oncoming headlights, you're going to be blinded for a good second or two after they pass.
  19. Parts!!!! Untitled by feliks.ca, on Flickr Old seals out... just used some needle nosed pliers - had to be careful not to get the aluminum head with them but with a bit of muscle they came out fairly easily! Screw buying a $55 tool for this! Untitled by feliks.ca, on Flickr New seals in place! Untitled by feliks.ca, on Flickr (another one because I like to take pictures, and engines are sweet looking. ) Untitled by feliks.ca, on Flickr
  20. Well he told me to come by on Wednesday and pick it up so we'll see! It's just a rubber grommet...I guess another dealer has it, he just only had one left, and i needed two. Will be sure to test out the cracks before I put all the work into painting them again...I did drill the end of each crack so they wouldn't continue to grow. Learned that from youtube videos on the subject. Hopefully the glue works out!
  21. Wooo got my parts today! Except I need one more rubber gasket that I didn't think I was going to need! Gah...so that'll be here on Wednesday.
  22. On the bright side, it'll keep him safer.... lol Welcome to the forums!
  23. Got the valve covers painted up today....that was the last piece on the engine to paint! Now I need parts, hurry up Japan!!!
