  1. Screwing airscrew home does not seem to make much difference..but screwing it out does make revs rise. Also took it for a spin with airscrew out and it ran a lot better at low revs..like its not getting enough air with standard setting. Idling weird though..when stopping it idles high for awhile then slowly starts to die..and you can hear its like its not getting enough fuel unless you nurse the throttle. Turning the idle screw seems to have no effect until I`ve made quite a few turns..then idling jumps up or it dies..but no matter what I do with the idle screw, when idling revs always eventually come down till it dies. Plug looks ok I think..it is a new plug. I have just noticed a leak by exhaust manifold..will need a new gasket.
  2. Bike going great from 5000rpm upwards..below that its sputtering and not idling. Wondering now about the oil/fuel mixture. Its running on the autolube system and someone suggested it may be drowning in oil..so he suggested a hotter plug. I`ve noticed in the manual the oil delivery can be set so wondering if I should fiddle with it.
  3. Couldn`t believe it would be that easy..loosened everything, tapped front wheel against a wall and got it straight. Thought something must be bent.
  4. Thanks Airhead..was reading up on here for crankshaft seals saw a post from you about this..also I see it only tends to leak on magneto side as other side immersed in oil. Does it have to be WD40 or can I use another lubricating fluid? I normally use Q20..not sure if it makes a difference.
  5. Yep..spray coming thru there Airhead. Strange I have swopped carbs and although its running better, both carbs have an idling issue. Maybe both these bikes have crankshaft seal issues.
  6. Referring to those small 3 holes on the shaft in the pic.
  7. I can`t see how to break this down further. I do witness carb spray coming through the tube holes so they are clear. I notice there is no seals on the mating surfaces in the pic and where it screws onto the carb. Shouldn`t there be some sort of seal where these parts screw together? Also this tube came out when I pulled off the hose from the tank. Is this normal?..just pushed it back in.
  8. Anybody see this episode. Henry Cole featured an XT as one of the icons of the late seventies before starting his trip through South Africa on a british bike. Nice to see an XT on TV.
  9. Recent pic of the 2 DT`s..as well as the XT.
  10. Very funny Airhead...what`s the procedure??
  11. When riding straight forward the handlebars pointing heavily to the left. Things very skew in front. Would think triple trees have taken some knocks. Not very pleasant riding this way...also if I release handlebars while moving the bike feels very unstable. Is there a way of straightening it?
  12. When going thru the gears, the neutral light starts flashing in most gears. It does look normal when in neutral. Could this be a short or faulty switch?
  13. Took it for bit of a run today..amazing how these little bikes pull..front wheel pops up 1st and 2nd and she goes on to 100km/h quite easily. So running well under full throttle, but idling very erratic. If I pull choke after a run she does die which is good. Idles high for awhile then wants to die.
  14. Swopped carbs and spent the day putting everything back on the bike to get it road legal..but something still not right..goes better but still tends to prefer choke. Going to ride the hell out of it for awhile and see if it gets better. She pulls like an XT500 with a good clutch. Will see if I can get this emulsion tube out of the original carb.
  15. Airscrew I know..all the way in and 1 and 1/4 turns out. What is this emulsion tube?
  16. Good advice here and lot`s of things i`m not aware of..emulsion tubes??..didnt know there must be certain no of turns on the pilot. I just tightened it back in. I have fitted new needle and seat and set float height to 21mm as per the manual. Decided to swop carbs with the other bike and its running a lot better. So at least I can be sure its the carb.
  17. Still no joy..got the pilot jet out..again carb cleaner and compressed air everywhere..and I mean everywhere..fuel still coming out of carb overflow. Can it not be sucking air?..are the jets not suspect? Think I need to take it to a carb specialist.
  18. Couple of comments here got me wondering if its not running bit rich. How do I adjust that..different jets..airscrew??
  19. Will try tomorrow...hopefully the last time carb coming off..otherwise going to try swopping carbs with the other bike. There is an inline fuel filter in place which should cancel out any gunk from the tank.
  20. First thing you fit is a performance exhaust. It improved my top end drastically on my TDM850.
